I got my first birds 3 years ago. And I've been reading this post for about a year now. I noticed how much drama goes on here, and have been particularly carefull not to hurt anyones feelings... So, I'm getting a lil anxiety about this years breeding.. I had 3 pair of breeders and 13 kit birds in december, and was quite worried about the outcome for the fall fly this year('09). I asked my mentor for anything, culls or whatever, that i could use to make me feel more comfortable about having enough stock to fly my first fall fly. SO he came through. But not culls. REALLY good birds, 7 pair. My current line is Agent/Jaconette. The birds I obtained to stock were Pensom, Evans, Agent, and Pensom/Evans/Reed mix... The Reeds I attained are "Secret Agent Spinners" with Peds.. Steve Agent is a Great guy. He sent me the peds for free. NOW HERES THE PROBLEM, the 13 kit birds i metioned i had bred from last year, well they have all paired up(besides the extra Cock. Now, with the 6 new pair im lookin at 15 or 16 pair. Out of the 6 new pair from last year that just paired up i would have only stocked 4 of em... But, I ended up just giving them all nest bowls( I love my birds a lil too much), and i guess im going to see what happens. I keep GOOD records of what im doing in breeding, and I take notes every time i fly in a journal.. All in all, im just lookin for opinions from other roller people on what im doing, and if its wrong or right. Or, what i should do besides build a new kit box!

I fly out anything that I have bought to see if I like what I see in the sky because of past experience of not doing that and wasting many years .that is the only way you going to find out if you breeding from a non kit bird or a roll down ect ect..this is me and trust me if I lose what I have lets say because of BOP I don't care I will purchase some again..but I need to see them in the sky before I pair them up and breed from them,so you have to decide that..not just having confidence on them but on what you feel..good luck in what ever choice you make..

J.C., Apparently you have gotten some help from Marty, Ray and possibly Walter. If any of these guys helped you out, you are definitely in good hands! What you could do is use the kit birds that you weren't planning to stock, as fosters for the other pairs. By the way, I also band HRC. Tracey

Donnie.. I woud never breed a "cull".. What i was refering to was breeding a bird that would make the b team kit, but not the stock pen and ending up with a bunch of culls... Im new at this, but i do know a true cull.

J.C., Remember Walter is a Master flier and your Uncle and Ray can hold their own any day. Make sure you drain that well of knowledge every chance you get.

Tracey, you already know.... I absorbed knowledge from my Uncle for a year before i went to Canton, Texas and bought my first birds just to see if i could keep them alive. My Uncle, Ray, Walter and Steve Agent(through E-Mail) are an oasis of roller knowledge that im glad to have at a phone call away.. Im 25 now, and I LOVE this hobby. I plan on doing my very best at makin my own name in it, as well as turn on some friends the way my Uncle and Ray have for me...

Welcome J.C.! I work for a crude oil pipeline co.(TEPPCO) and our 30" line starts in Freeport. I been riding our supervisor to let me come down there and watch the tankers unload. He says maybe this summer! If it happens, maybe you can hook me up and I can meet some flyers and watch some birds, maybe tear into some crawfish too!
Welcome to the site and good luck with the birds! sounds like you got some good blood and mentors to get you going in the right direction! ---------- Val

AND Tracey!!! How did you pin down my mentors so easily? HA ha! Im just wondering man!
I knew your Uncle had sent birds to someone in Freeport and when you mentioned guys in Houston helping you out....I knew it had to be Ray and probably Walter. I've been a friend of Rays' since 2001 and you couldn't ask for a better friend.

Welcome J.C., I too would foster the 6 pair from last year kit birds and concentrate on the 7 new pair and the 3 old pair. This way you will have alot of rollers for the fall and have some left over for the following year. Giving you more time to evaluate your future stock birds. I see you have quality help in getting started so use it and biuld up your kits. Culling is easier when you have a few kits going. Good luck
