I have printed this thread also very good info.

Scott just so you know a peak crest and a shell crest are the same (or really close) to genetic modifiers. You can get any degree of crest from the crest gene. I have seen arch angels that bred shell crests and komoners that bred peak crests. I have galaiti rollers that have a nasel crest and I get peak nasel crests and rose nasel crest from the all rose nasel crest parents. Two peaks can create a shell and a shell to a plain can create peak.Crest gene is crest gene.

Not trying to rock the boat just adding to your post.

What do pigeons and genetics have to do with pigeons? As Scott likes to say "Geez I'm getting a friggin headache".....You act like rollers are their own species...They are pigeons! Find two good dimpels or nibs or whatever you want to call them and breed them together and you will get more. You will also get more predominate dimpling as you go...After time you will what some call crests..

I ask a question? That opens up communication..where is the one side idea in that..Is not this forum for discussion?
I ask the question again..arch angels, komoners, galaiti ..what does this have to do with the Birmingham Roller.?
David said that crest were.. modifiers.. I think he meant..mutations.
Where does the "crest" come from it was not found on the common pigeon..rock dove.?

Brad, You are right I meant mutation I used the word modifier because that is what a mutation does it modifies the apperance of the particular specie you are working with.

I used the examples of other breeds to explain to scott that crest is the same gene no matter how it is express since he used this statement,

"Hector, as you can see they are "peaks" which you will see pop up in some lines, not the Helmut type crests from the obvious crossbreds."

So that is why I mentioned the other breeds. To explain to scott that the crest gene is the crest gene. It will express itself self in different ways but still the same gene. The gene still will follow the basic rescive gene trail, a bird must carry two genes for crest, for crest to appear.

You are right the crest is not found in rock doves neither is tumble, roll, or colors like spread ash red "Lavendar" you do not find muffs, more than 12 tail feathers and the list goes on. About the only thing that the rock dove has in common with domesticated doves/pigeons is homing ability. Everthing else is a mutation/modifier that we as pigeon breeders enjoy.
