Killex works if you cant get your hands on any thing else,
You can pick it up at Home Depot, a cap full in a gallon of water sprayed under the wings and tail with a spray bottle.
Good luck.

Hi,
A lot of roller fanciers in England use pour-on wormer that is sold for sheep and cattle.
The one I use is a 0.5% ivermectin solution.
Two drops on the back of the neck using a pipette, (eye dropper) will cure worms and will kill any mites or lice that feed on the blood. Some guys re-treat after a few weeks but I believe the product remains active in the birds for several weeks.
I'm not sure if it kills feather eating lice, but my birds are always clear of any signs of infestation within a few days.
Administering is a little fiddly because you have to part the feathers to reveal the skin and it is probably better if there are two of you, although I manage to do mine without too much hassle.
As this liquid enters through the skin, wear surgical goves for your own safety. Although it appears expensive it can work out very economical if you can share a bottle with other fanciers. I bought a 250ml bottle 2 years ago and I have over half of it left and it's now out of date. Having said that, if I had bought proprietory pigeon wormer and flea powder it would have cost me a lot more.
Pete.

Pete, I've used ivermectin before, it's good stuff, and kills all nasties crawling around on the birds.

I now use a product called Van Verminex. Don't know if you can buy it in America, but is is also very good. Comes in liquid form, and all you do is administer a drop on the perch; the vapours kill lice, mites etc on the birds, and also if you get any flies in the loft in the summer, kills them too. It lasts for months. It's the only product I use now.

Hi all and.....roller lady,

The best product to use right now is Moxidectin.. Have a look on what I wrote a few months ago in our Modena Talk Group discussion:

''Moxidectin comes in ready to use format. The recommended dosage is
to give two drops to the back of the neck. A second dose is necessary
but should be given at least two to three weeks apart. As a general
mites preventative, it is recommended to give Moxidectin 2 weeks
before breeding and every three to six months. Most mites will not
kill your pigeons but you might notice a significant decrease in egg
production. Moxidectin will kill all mites including: Air Sac mites,
Feather mites, Red mites and Scaly mites.

The US department of agriculture has done many studies on both
Moxidectin and Ivermectin and they reported that Moxidectin is much
safer and effective than Ivermectin.

Furthermore, one thing is very imporant to remember about Ivomec. It has been
proven now that Ivomec make most of the cocks infertiles for 3 weeks,
what is not the case with Moxidectin. If you want to use Ivomec, you
better use it after the molt or
f in winter.

There are several mites sprays on the market bit the best one is
moxidectin.

Moxidectin Plus - This wormer has all of the benefits of Moxidectin
along with the added ingredient of praziquantel for tapeworm control,
making this the best all-round wormer for pigeons. Developed by Dr.
Colin Walker, "The Flying Vet." (Australian Pigeon Company

Here is what Dr. Collin Walker add about Moxidectin.

Moxidectin is regarded as the bird wormer of choice by most
veterinarians. It is effective against roundworm, hairworm and any
external parasites that feed off body fluids (i.e. mites, pigeon
flies). It can be used during moulting, racing and breeding and can
either be given in its concentrated form directly into the throat or
alternatively diluted into the drinking water. It is also well
absorbed through the skin and can therefore be applied topically,
which is convenient for small birds such as canaries and
budgerigars. The drug has a wide safety margin and birds can be fed
and watered normally during its use.

Moxidectin is a clear, fully water-soluble palatable syrup. Added to
the drinking water for 24 hours, it clears roundworm (Ascaridia spp.)
and hairworm (Capillaria spp.) infection. It is also effective
against all external parasites that feed off body fluids, including
mites and pigeon flies (Pseudolynchia spp.). Moxidectin also
eliminates airsac mites (Sternostoma spp., Cytodites spp.). It has a
wide safety margin and is safe to use during racing and breeding. It
does not affect feather quality and is safe to use during moulting.
Moxidectin does not cause nausea and so the birds can be fed and loft-
flown normally during treatment''

Moxidectin is made by "Fort Dodge Animal Health" in Fort Dodge Iowa. I worked for the company making "Synovex" growth implants for a number of years. Ivermectin kills all but tape worms Ray. Does the Moxidectin kill tape worms as well?

I had a bunch of gallons of it given to me by one of the salemen a few years back. I considered using it for my hounds, but for some reason decided not too. I dont remember why. Yes if it makes the claim to control tape worms it should. If it is safe to use I would think the easiest way to use it would be a small amount in the bath water. I like to use a capful of bleach and a capful of fabric softener in my bathwater.

If you are using a pour-on wormer that is intended for cattle, always check the ingredients.
A friend of mine from Ireland was telling me a couple of years ago that he knew another fancier who used an ivomectin type product and it killed his birds, (maybe this is where the safelty issue come from?)
Apparently one type had stuff in that was poisonous to birds. It may have beed cobalt and something, I forget.
This was the wormer that caused the death of large numbers of vulpines on the Indian sub-continent.
If a cow died from illness or was killed by preditors, the vultures and Buzzards that fed on the carcases were dying.
This raised an upswell of optimism from the pigeon flyers in Europe, thinking they could use the wormer and it would kill any raptors that killed the pigeon, but they didn't realise (didn't think?) that it would kill the pigeons.
Pete.

Hi Roller Lady,
You can also use diatomaceous earth. It is 100% natural. Dust them with it, concentrate near the vent and under the wings where the critters hide...being careful not to get it in their eyes. A little sprinkle of it on the feed also gets rid of internal parasites. I have also used it to kill ants in the loft. Tony used to sell it on this site I think.

p.s. glad to see another lady here :)

and another Roller Lady's opinion...we use a little sprinkle (under the wings and tails) of a generic, no-name poultry "dust" from our local feed store.

Roller Lady ,chemicals used on livestock ?,its avoidable ,dont use it ,the best remedy for any type of louse/mite on pigeons is an age old remedy dating back to the 1800s or even before ,Salt ,put salt in the bathing water of your birds and take a look the following day ,hey presto all gone and salt is safe too ,no side effects to worry about ,leave the chemical stuff alone ,jim ,uk ,(salt water bath user).
