It depends on what you like/want? If you want performance birds that you could compete with study the NBRC bulletins and see who's consistently winning the flys and inquire about getting birds from them. If you are not real particular find a local flyer through NBRC and get some from them. They could be great but expect average. Keep in mind a great stereo and a junk stereo both play music. One is cheap one is expensive depends on what your expectations are. Even if you get birds from a comp guy though don't think they will automatically be great birds, maybe just better odds of getting better birds. Also flea market birds and high class birds cost the same to maintain. I spent 1,000.00 on my lab it is a perfomace bred retriever and it does what I want - which is go get my ducks/geese for me. People may say I'm crazy but I look at it as over the life of the dog 10+ years 1,000 is really $100.00 bucks a year. My buddy has a 250.00 lab that watches my lab get the ducks/geese we shoot. It's from show lines that doesn't have the build, desire, or drive of my dog. Still a fun pet as long as your standards are low. Decide what you really want first. He's stuck with a loving friend that in my opinion is worthless. I also have a loving friend that is a high drive bird getting machine.

There are a whole hell of a lot of good families out there. I would recommend that you visit as many lofts as you can and take up the one who impresses you most. ---------- Just My Take On Things

Pumpkin took the words right out of my mouth. If I was to start all over again, I would first see who is placing at the top ten. Then I would go to as many flys as possible AND PICK ALL OF MY BIRDS FROM THE AIR. This will give you a better chance to obtain competition rollers. Know you are breeding something that you saw for yourself fly and you will not be guessing. Also remember that every line of birds have their fair share of culls. Trust me ---------- BIG WILLY TOPP FLIGHT/NCRC

I would pick a bloodline you have access to. Seldom will a single importation or purchase suffice. Also if you pick birds you can go and see, visit with the guy you got them from, see in person how he does things. Have him come see your birds once you get them going, give his opinion on what you're doing with them ... I think its wise to pick a strain that is from your area or an from an area with similar conditions. It doesnt take alot of change in latitude or elevation or weather to make a big difference ...
I would be interested in learning what Aubrey Thibodeaux has going on. Some others that interest me, Norwoods, Emberton, Ouelette, KGB, Szabatura, Mee, Kieth London, Urbon

Well Donny, Jason Browns birds are from Joe Borges and Jays birds are his own line over many years of breeding and they derrive from John Destout. Toms birds I am not possitive but I dont believe they are the same line as Starley. I have judged all 3 of their kits in the past along with many others and I would say that If I were to start over again I would be giving Jay Starley or Brad Winward a call. I liked the control I seen at Jays but I really liked the spin and the overal depth of Brads Birds. Joe ---------- J.M.Urbon Lofts A Proven Family of Spinners http://www.freewebs.com/jmurbonlofts/

LOL Scott you hit it on the head!!!! First of all I would be sick, and discourged after so much time invested. But if that were the case I would start with one cock and three hens, Dosent really matter what family just as long as it has the charcter Im looking for, Keeping in mind that I could get a jump start by geting the birds from someone who has the same views as me, But no matter how much you pay you cant buy time invested into building a family of rollers. Reguardless of the family of birds, you are gonna have to spend time, that the hardest thing for me.

The Problem with.. starting over.. is the time factor. I see birds now and again that I would like to breed but thinking about breeding them three to five generations in... to began.. to see what you have.. limits it happening. Now If... I had to start over ..I just don't want to think about it..Most of my family that I have now has come by accident/luck.. I would start over by line/in breeding and not crossbreeding that is for sure. bwinward
