A friend of mine has a hen that is having problems laying the second egg. She is breathing very hard and she looks very stressed. What do you think this could be?

Will, I was told that you should give them a cod liver oil pill. They are liqiud pills.
But I would steralize something like a seringe with out a needle or a baby emama thing and give her 1 teaspoon of vasoline in the but. If she is egg bound you will feel the egg in the rear. You might even be able to see it if she just is not able to push it out. I would get her some good gut bacteria since she is stressed she is going to need it. Maybe anti-biotics too. but give the pro-bios good gut bacteria after the anti-biotics. That is if she is worth the money you have to spend on her to save her. Good luck Bill

Is her rectum pushed out with the egg showing under membrane? If so you can keep her in a cage with a wire floor and maybe a block of wood for her to roost on and using a cotton ball dipped in petroleum jelly rub the vent area gently and leave her to try to pass the egg. Try to keep her off sawdust or sand flooring to keep her clean. That has worked for me in the past.

my friend puts a little codliver oil onto the corn once a month as he says its good for them. Anything he does i do. lol. I get 3 capsuals and put a little hole in them and squirt it over the corn in the tray, then give it a little mix around with my finger.
good look .harrison uk hull. I had an hen last year and all her second eggs had no hard shell but a thin rubber skin on them,? of course she no longer lives with me.
Could someone tell me the reason for this so if it happens in the future i will be educated thank you. Harrison

Harrison I think not enough calcium causes that.what I give the hens when mated before they lay is a calcium pill every other day to cocks a vitamin E pill helps stimulate the sexual hormones..now they have a vitamin E liquid 5 drops to a gallon in water mix and its all good..
