Hey guys just wanted to tell you guys I was at the beach the other day, I was watching a bunch of commies and they flew out to the reef when the tide was low and they started to drink the ocean water have any of you guys seen that before? When I go hunting on the other island for deer they too go to the ocean to drink water? Well I guess they now how to get the salt they need for there system. So what I am saying is it good to take some ocean water and give to our birds? dilute salt water to fresh water? I know that grit has the salt in it. Well just thinkin out loud. Clayton

Clayton I bet its Don who gives his birds a little salt water once a month, we should call him Doctor Don. Pigeons love salt. I had some natural salt rocks from utah, but when I moved I forgot them. All the guys use them in utah. Paul Bradford was the one who started them on it. The birds will actally lick the rock. I've seen birds that have not had salt in the lives (sure they get a little from grit) acutally go nuts over it so one has to be carefull not to let them OD on it. What Doctor Don is doing is perfect in my opinion. Your Buddy Jim Bowen

Clayton, Not sure about actual salt water,it's not the same around here as when we were kids.
On the other hand,I have been putting Alae salt[hawaiian red earth salt] in the breeders grit pot for about 6 years now, just a sprinkle. They seem to pick for it.
As you know Dennis's birds land on the overpass rocks, not just for minerals, but also for salt crystals....Aloha,Todd

Jim, Don definetly has some theory's on what a pigeon consumes.
To this day,I still put my grains in a screened box,and then direct sunlight. He said it changes the sugars in the grain. All I know is the pigeons just love to eat it after that...Aloha,Todd

Hi all,
I found the followings about Epsom salt! I agree completely with what is written!!!
Raymond.
“Many top fanciers also know that it is better to purify than resorting to the old fashioned method of purging. You must read his book "The Flying Vet" again (and so must he if he can't remember what he has written!!!) and digest what he says about Epsom Salts. We are referring to liver damage that may be caused through constant purging or overdosing with Epsom Salts, not disease?? I respect the fact that you say you are a Veterinarian but I am astonished that you have not progressed with the advent of modern science in the avian field, especially in the skills of how to make a racing pigeon perform satisfactorily for many years of its life. I do not believe that any pigeon that is purged for 3 years will still perform, I believe in honest reporting that has been referenced fully, I myself do not write without doing my homework.
No I am not mistaken, just probably better informed. To be a qualified veterinarian does not make you an authority in this field, and I regret you have used this fact as a lever to make a point that is not acceptable by me or my knowledgeable colleagues, and even Colin Walker himself.
My only hope is that those who read these comments will do a little more research before deciding to use Epsom Salts on their pigeons.
It CA "There is no place for Epsom salts in the loft. Avoid it like the plague. The old idea that it should be used to "clean out" birds is a myth - clean out of what? I ask. To use it on recently returned racing birds -again to clean them out - is just not reasonable. It doesn't kill worms, canker organisms, coccidia or bacteria. It works by drawing badly needed fluids from body tissues into the intestines and these fluids are then expelled as loose droppings - hence the idea, I suppose, of cleaning birds out. It simply dehydrates returning racers even further, something they really don't need. As I suggested in an article I wrote, if you really feel that you need to use Epsom salts, take them yourself! Don't inflict this chemical (magnesium sulfate) on your birds folks - just don't use it in drinking water for your birds."
AND THIS
"The reason for this is simple, I do not believe in purging but purifying, therefore Epsom salts and Dicestal is old fashioned and has a detrimental effect on the pigeon. The modern scientific method is to purify the blood and get rid of the toxins, which build up in a birds system."Not damage their health.

Good post Ray...some good points in that.. The only time I use Epsom salt is when I bathe the birds I make sure they had a good drink of clean water before ..birds only drink they they need to.I use it to relax the birds good for stiffness sore muscles.when molting they be in alot of pain from soreness with new primary and secondary growing in.. ---------- If there is no enemy inside the enemy outside can't do you no harm.. I think the initial post from Clayton was about OCEAN SALT WATER,as an additive.
There are minerals in the deep ocean that are proven to be some of the best obtainable,"the essence" so to speak.
Where you guys started to think the thread was about EPSOM SALT is beyond me.
This wasn't a thread about purging your birds,it's based on the nutrional value of OCEAN salt water.
Ray,I agree with you 100% with your thoughts on epsom salt.I never have and never will give that stuff to my racers or rollers. You should have started a new post with epsom salt as the topic.....Aloha,Todd

Jim I also brought a Red salt rock back from Utah. Jay told me if I left without one I would be the first.I couldn't start that trend so I picked a big one and believe me it cost me plenty to bring it back. I almost had to buy another ticket to get it home. It took a little while for the birds to get use to it but boy once they figured out what it was they literally sucked on it. You could stand out there with a squirt bottle and they would go crazy. Good stuff, I need to get more. All I have left is a couple really small pieces. Todd the reason Ray started talking about Epsom salt is because BigWilly said After I worm my birds I give them Epson salt to flush them out." so I think it was a good time to point it out regardless if the tread was about salt water.. ---------- If there is no enemy inside the enemy outside can't do you no harm.. I use iodized table salt at about 1 tsp. per gallon. The iodine will help make the eggs more hatchable. I give my breeders a little salt in their water about twice per month during breeding season. Except for during late summer when its real hot, because their water intake volume is so high. The birds need a little salt now and then too, they get it from grit, but I think its a little supplement that does them some good. ---------- Jon

I was told long ago that giving the birds some salt in the water will cut down on the birds grit consumption.
