There is a mind set that if you pair a 10 footer with a thirty footer you will get 20 footers. I have found what you actually get is some 10 footers and some 30 footers.

Nick,
My experience is the same as yours. I put this misbelief in the same category with color balancing. Mythology!

Scott - I just used those depts to demonstrate the point. A ten footer don't hit very many breeder's loft.

Joe,
I am often glad you are in the same region I am in. If you are flying in the WC and NBRC I should be at your place in one or both events. If you ain't flying it would be nice if you could come and watch Jim Bowen fly and Norm Boettcher also lives nearby Jim. They have some very good birds.

I have been told that you are wasting your time if you try balancing the roll out?
I have been doing best to best so far and I am getting some good birds this way.
But I get the odd 1 roll down.
His that due to the birds been to deep in the first place or is that just somthing to excpect once in a while?
I have one pair and they are 50footers with eas nice and tight and good controle.
I only got them back end of breeding last year and got a single raise ot of them.
This bird rolled 100foot plus and didnt even stop untill it smashed its self.
I have this pair on eggs now.
What would be the chance of this happerning again?
thanks harrison uk

For those who worship at the altar of St. Richard, here is an excerpt from one of his articles.

"Second, let me say, I do not breed spin to spin. For if this was all there was to breeding good spinners, then everyone would have a loft of fine performers. Such is not the case. It is my personal judgment that the breeder who knows how to spot the correct type in these birds and breeds for same, will have more than his share of exceptional performers! Consequently, one’s cull to good bird ratio will be reduced."

Personally, I have never subscribed to the "if the type is right, the roll is right" theory. But some still do.

Joe, I have found that if you follow the roll with birds strong in charactor that it is hard to go wrong, my best make my best no two ways about it, but there is also more too it than that also that evolves around balancing the physical and mental aspects of the birds.

Scott,
We agree. But some big name breeders in the past propagated this type is right, the roll is right theory and there are still some out there that believe it. Stable, strong character spinners to the same is the way to increase your percentages, not breeding for type. Just threw this out there for the benefit of some of the youngsters who have not heard this theory before.
Regards,

Of coarse there are Joe, it goes back to the pedigree and show breeders , it is an ecuse to not proove the birds out in the air.
From what I see most like what their "mind" tells them should be right, hence the the short coby birds, I learned to learn from the birds and not what my mind says it "should" look like, which lead me back to birds with some cast on them.

Depth is secondary to speed and style. If the 10 footer had incredible speed and style I would breed it.

I agree Russ. I value style, tight H frame, and velocity over depth but if you can get 20-40' with the style and velocity its a great bonus.

IOWA.
Splitt your pairs up for atleast 2 weeks but leave the cocks in the breeding pen.
Then bring the hens back in.
As I learnt from on here Feed your birds morning and night.
Giving a hand full of HEMP before each feed.
I had the same problem and did what I have wrote above.
I put my hens back in under 2 weeks ago and every single pair have 2 eggs each.
I have never had my birds all lay on the same days.
Uptill now.
so all my young will come out together and all be the same age when training them.
BRILLIANT STUFF.
I have 15 pairs going (this year is going to be a big one for me.
Good look and hope you get sorted.

I still havent been able to pin down what will happen if i breed a 10footer with a 30footer. Maby yone day that will come every pair that I try to predict fools me everytime, I have been workin on my family of rollers for years now. people say dont breed check to check but I do and the birds are great. also people say dont breed of a stiff roller but I do. Most of the birds that I say are gonna be good rollers from my experience with a cirtain pair, do infact become good rollers and the cock only rolled 5ft.I think its all trial and error to some degree,,I mean it has to be with all the diffrent families/strains, and most of us admit that you cant handle all families the same as far as feeding, right? so maby that holds true for breeding also.. Just my thoughts. From my experience if , Every person and strain of roller is diffrent its about finding out what works for you...

I let the birds pick this year. Cant do any worse than I have lately. I seperate during the off season. Most of the "old" pairs repaired. Be interesting to see what difference it makes after some pairs not breeding together for a few years.
