I use Borax too. Be careful not to use 'Boraxo' its a different product, Borax .... I also sprinkle a little permethrin dust in the bath water too.

MY GOD I have heard it all now.(BLEACH) in the bath water.
Surely your birds are gonna have a drink of the water with it been warm.
The bleach will wipe your birds clean out.
I just use normal tap water and my birds couldnt get any cleaner then they are after a bath.
I havent even spraid my birds for lice since I got them and there isnt a mite in site,LOL. poet and I didnt no it.
I said to my friend do you worm your pigeons and he said no.
He said I have had pigeons for over 30 years and never ever seen a pigeon with worms.
As long as people stick to basic hygiene and dont mix there birds with other peoples birds things should be ok.
Treat them for canker before breeding yes bcause there going to be feeding young but apart from that I dont do nothing els.
I think the guy who told you to use bleach hates color in birds and wanted you to have bleachd birds.LOL.

Harrison,
20 Mule Team Borax is not bleach. It is a natural soap product

A small amount of chlorine bleach wont hurt them. I used to work in a food processing plant, and if you knew how your food was "cleaned" you probably would not eat it.

In 100-200PPM's it is very safe for consumption. Go buy a bag of pre made salad....and as soon as you open it...take a deep whiff....chlorine...and it's in the city water too...so it is only bad if you overdose it.
As is the case with most things...

Iowa rollers said he had heard that people use bleach.
Here in the uk bleach is a verry strong chemical that his used for cleaning floors, toilets,Outside drains,Sinks,ect..ect..
If you splill this stuff on you it stains your clothes white(BLEACHES YOUR CLOTHES).
I carnt believe for one min anyone would put this stuff in a pigeon bath.
WARNING.
Do not use BLEACH on Wool,Silk,Synthetic materials.
Keep away from Carpets,
DO NOT USE BLEACH on Enamelled sinks,ECT...ECT.. If BLEACH can do this then surely it will BLEACH the feathers on the bird.
It would poisen your birds.
If you get bleach in your eyes it can blind you.
Any uk guy will agree with me.
I dont no if this is the same stuff you guys are refering to?
Bleach contains,Sodium Hydroxide,
If BLEACH comes in to contact with the eyes Rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice.
If swalloed seek medical advice straight away and show them the label on the container.
No way can you bath pigeons in BLEACH.

No one said pure bleach Harrison. Used in a dilute form of about 100ppm, it is harmless to ingest. If you dont feel comfortable using it, then you probably should stick to water.

There are also bathing salts available at most pigeon supply stores, that's an option for you as well, however they must be diluted also.

I hear ya Harrison. I have only used water so far myself, but I am going to try the borax the next time, and see how it works out.

It is amazing how dirty the water gets after just a few minutes of them taking a bath, if the Borax will help with mites and lice...then I think it's a good preventive measure...whatta ya say?

I am cool with water.LOL.
Like I said I dont see paresites on my birds but if I do they will be terminated there and then.
I always like to handle my birds I just love to hold them once in a while. So I always whip the wings open and have a quick check.
I find by handling my birds it keeps the loft nice and settled when I go in as they no I aint no threat to them.
There is nothing worse then a shed full of wild crazy Flying pigeons.
Flying in your face and smashing in to walls.
Good look for 09 guys.
LETS HOPE FOR A GOOD ONE.

When allowing my birds a bath over the last thirty years i add salt its harmless and kills any parasites that may be around ,using bleach in drinking water and sometimes bath water is very common in the pigeon world judging by previous posts ,it helps the gut to clear unwanted bacteria and as long as you dont over-do it its safe,i dont recommend any form of soap as i have found out to my cost years ago it washes out the oil in the feathers and in severe cases the birds cant fly for a week or so ,i found this out when i was a novice and i added washing up liquid to the bath water ,the birds looked amazing when they had dried out but could not get any lift from their wings at all lol, i had to let them walk back into the loft that night ,jim uk.
