Billy, You'll find that they do pretty well on straight wheat, two cups per twenty birds in general, but they will need some austrain peas as well. I give the young birds a mix on the weekends and I use Guil Rands yo-yo method with old birds (less than a full ration of wheat on two rest days and a full ration of mix on fly days-the third day). I do not recommend you use much milo as it will turn them into yard darts. They have plenty of quality spin and speed in them as a rule, depending on how close they are to the foundation birds. Like Pensoms and any other family, many culls and unflown birds are being sold under the name only. Hopefully you picked your birds out of the air or got them from somebody you trust.
I rarely have problems with tree-sitters or house- sitters...maybe 1-2% and maybe another 2-3 % as non-kitters. If you breed them too hot you will get birds that bounce during landing, especially in their first year. Most good ones will learn better as they mature. They tend to be single depth rollers, though. If you find variable-depth birds they will be valuable to your breeding program, as with any family. You will rarely have problems with them flying too high and loosing them to overflys unless the ceiling is at 200-250 ft. Basically, they are among the most problem-free family of several families that I have handled. Good luck and let me know if I can be of any further help. Cliff

Thanks Johnnie and Cliff.. well Cliff I'm sure i got a good pair..even they are not picked out of the sky, but they are proven though.. so im guessing milo makes them more active to roll when flying? just wondering.. so i got a good chance of not getting house sitters then..:d Jk again Thanks

Billy, I wouldn't say that milo makes them more active....it seems more to rob them of the strength they need to roll hard and fast with good quality and able to maintain control...it may make them a little more frequent, but you will sacrifice speed and quality in my experience. My family of Turners, in particular, doesn't need to be broken down in any way in order to roll. In fact, they will need a little more protein than some other families so that they can roll with quality and speed and maintain good control. Cliff

---------- Mike Trevis The Bigger the Dream the Bigger the Leap
Hey Cliff, I have two Turner cocks here that came out of Doug Engermans loft. I put one with a Hardesty hen and the other with a Grover bird..I have not flown these birds, but one cock got out for a couple days..The old bugger started rolling immediately 5-10 feet, no roll down..He trapped with my kit birds and I put him back in the breeding loft..

Put a Trampoline in front of the kit box...or a swimming pool.....if you want to make a game out of it...put a bulls eye on the ground in front of the kit box and see how many birds can hit the middle...LOL..kidding....I had them at one time and they are high strung hot little boogers....you have to fly them alot and keep them fed up...but that was me...
Cliff could tell you more..he flys them

Try to fly the young birds twice a day until they start rolling. Once they start rolling start flying them every other day.Rest them for 2 to 3 day's once every 2 months with a good grit and and mix of feed, I use my breeder mix. ---------- Ty Vapor Trail Lofts

Paul, were you feeding them barley ? I think alot has to do with the handler of the bird's and the dedication to them. I have stood under kit's with Mr. James before and I never did see one of his birds bump and they were blowing smoke. The further along I get in my breeding program the less birds I have that are bumping. Learning how to feed and fly the family makes the difference and of course I was not given Junk birds to start out with either. Which makes the biggest difference. ---------- Ty Vapor Trail Lofts

Almost the same, I use a little more austrian peas than he does.I'm not sure how the Strait birds will work on this method but the Turners work well on it ---------- Ty Vapor Trail Lofts
