For those of you that have children. How about some advice or words of caution to get kids interested without turning them off. My boys are 3 and 4. Right now they are interested and wanting me to build them a kit box so they can have their own birds. We also have a new neighbor boy age 11 that has shown some interest in the birds. I knoq some guys make mistakes that turn their kids off from birds. Feel free to share your experiences.

I also have two boys 7 and 11 and they always enjoyed helping me feed the birds. They have both claimed a kit box for themselves but they are just kids and they dont have the interest as us roller guys. They go on all the comp flies with me but they would rather roller skate, fish, bike ride, play video games instead of working with and training young birds to fly. Maybe when they are older they might be more interested.

I had just gone to my sons school for parrent teacher conference and pigeons came up in conversation. The teacher was more into my rollers than my sons school work. (He is a good student and she didnt have anything to complain about) So before I left she asked me if the class could come over for a field trip to see the birds fly. My eye brawls raised as I said off course, it would be fun. I told here I would release some birds and show the kids my organic garden and compost piles and vermocompost and how I feed the soil and the soil feeds the plants and the garden feeds us. Then as the birds trap in I will let out some more birds to fly. I cant wait to get them flying again so I can plan a day for the class to come over and see the roller pigeons. I live 15 blocks from their school. Bill C

#1 The trick is to make them think it is their idea. #2 These birds like any other hobby or sport either perks your interest or ot doesnt. How many people get in and even when somebody starts them on the right track with good birds fall by the wayside after a year or two. It is a lot harder than it looks. Asking for their help is a good way to do the father son thing. Then they find out about girls and sports. Good luck and pray for them.

i stated by letting the kids see the eggs a few times a week.get them looking forward to the hatching of their very own pigeon baby.when they see the egg has hatched they cant wait to see the little bugger.they will see it fill out with feathers and see the transformations from peep,to squeek,to mature bird,to seeing it develop in the roll, and possibly to a proud parent, like you are of them.

Yea some kids just show a intrest automaticly. I know that my dad and uncle raised rollers and so thats how I got interested. I have a couple of kids my 15 year old feeds my rollers when Im on fires and watches them with me someimes. My 8year old had just recently asked me to build him a Kit box. I really dont push the hobby on them if they want to raise rollers they can. We have a really young club member and he really likes my birds, I have given him a few and he is really dedicated he is like 11years old. last year I told him I will give him a kit, so he will be geting those birds in a few weeks. think the youth are the future and thats whay I am willing to give away my hard work. Also I have noticed that it is hard for young kids to compete with the "Money Man " at all the shows I have been to Ive seen a kid or two cry great tactic...LOL the young dont have a chance even if they have a paper route. I know when we have a club show we will have some good birds avilible but we will set a diffrent bracket for the youngsters to aquire the same stock as most of the guys willing to spend big bucks. That way they dont get discourged with low end birds or culls. support the young buy providing the oppurtunity to get birds us adults want....1

Even if they dont stick to it or get serious, there is a good chance that later in life, they will return to pigeons,..
Just look at so many of us I`ve seen posted. Many of us had a taste of the pigeon bug as kids. Quit for a few years and at some point as adults, the bug raised its head again, and here we are...

I have two sons 20 and 17 and they have been interested in the birds on and off over the years. I have always spent alot of time with my sons so it was only natural that we spent time together watching and feeding the birds. At their ages, girls are more important than the birds but I can always count on them to take care of the birds if I'm not around. I don't know if they will be fanciers later in life but they will at least have some knowledge and appreciation for the birds.

My son will be getting his first birds for his birthday tomorrow, he will be 15. He doesn't know about them yet, but he'll be getting a nice kit of 10 fireball rollers, from a very well respected gentleman in the hobby. I cant wait to see his face when he opens the box....

He has been helping me with my birds, but he wanted his own...ya know something that isn't Dad's, so that is what he'll be getting! I think he's hooked already, and since I got back into the hobby, he and I have spent a lot more time together talking and working on projects together...could it get ant better?

What I do now with the younger kids in the hobby is try to provide good birds..Ive seen some young kids that were more on track than adults... and yes Im still kinda a kid also
