A Peregrine has been taking my birds out of the air on at least three occassions the last one it crabbed the bird started caring it away and it let out a scream out of no where comes a second peregine and crabs the bird off the first one in mid air.

Is it a pair ? WIll they migrate or are they nesting in the area ? what do I do?

Should i just fly a couple of birds at a time?

John,
Be prepared to have your birds locked down 8 or 9 months of the year, and lose lots. Those SOBs never give up around here except some of the spring and summer months I get a break from a resident pair.

All I can say is lock down or get about 60 breeding pair and take your chances.

If the 1st bird gave the pigeon to the other you are in trouble. Their are only two reasons I can think of as to why this would occur.
1 Parent feeding offspring. Not sure about your area, but I do not think any parent is feeding a offspring of that maturity at this time.
2 Parent giving food to other parent to feed nesting offspring. If they are not nesting with chicks, I bet they are building a nest close by. She only left to get food and straight back to the nest site.

Either way I would bet they are sticking around, and close enough to see when you release. So you are goig to have a few choices, Lock down, and be quick about it, or breed like crazy for you are going to loose one everyday you fly.
Sorry and good luck.

Hey Can,if you got hit lock for a week and don't let out at that time anymore pick another time and fly few only because they get pick fast in a bunch good luck..----------I'm flying 8 at a time now not by choice because that's what they left me with and I have 2 pairs I'm breeding from..so their is one falcon trying get them but no luck I think its a young one because if it was mature he wouldn't give up until he got his prey.this one try but leaves empty handed..

They are the worse because they can simply out fly everthing. They are smart and will even try to enter your loft, sometimes with you even standing there. I would lock down for about five weeks and retry.

The male falcon catch it’s pray and hand it to the female falcon as a gesture or a gift when they are courting and ready for mating.

Lock your birds just like everybody else suggested so that they move on. Start with couple of weeks first and then test the water.

I'm afraid to tell you but,I think you have a major problem. I have been dealing with this for 20 years. If they are year round residents then you will lose birds often no matter what you do. I flew from my mother- in-laws for 4 years and when I started to fly at my house again they were still there. I just got done with 5 months of lockdown and the 1st time out they hit me. I have tried flying all times a day and nothing has worked. I live next to a railyard and there has to be 2 thousand pigeons there. The falcon has flown straight thru a flock of wild pigeons to get to mine. I will say this... the last 4 times flying I have not seen the falcon. I live in wisconsin and I think they are busy making nests and breeding. It seems to me that the best time of year to fly for me is the next 4 months. I think they feed on some other birds that are coming back.... ducks and such. Come july 1st they hit me hard they are feeding young big time. I know this sounds awful and I'm sorry for you. Nothing is worse than having your birds getting taken on a daily fly. I hope I'm wrong in your case. I have too thought of mobil flying, it might be the way I eventually go. Good luck... Mike

I'll be flying some young Oriental Rollers in a few weeks time.Hopefully they will get to maturity and be able to outfly the SOBs around here and train the falcons they can't get my birds so easily.

I have been flying under a nesting pair for 4 years now. Still looking for advice that will help.

I have had the best luck flying as late as possible. Hopefully they have already eaten….

Lock down only helps if they are migrating. MINE DO NOT. I lock down during the Winter, but this only saves on my loses it changes nothing when I bring them back out of lockdown.

I have four pair of Oriental Rollers in breeding. They have the reputation of being more hawk resistant than Birmingham's (if you can get them to maturity) I am going to give it a try.

I raise 75 young a year, and loose 60 percent do to BOP. For me it is not choosing the best rollers just survival of the fittest. My breeding program has gone nowhere in the past 4 years.

Just started getting the holdover kits out this year. Second release, I had two falcons overhead. Lost a bird.

Going to be another fun year.

I'll stop complaining, my Coopers don't seem as bad now. I have learned that timing is important. I try to switch up fly times and fly during parts of the day I think the B.O.P. might have scored. Early afternoon or late in the evening, but then you risk over fly! The birds do better in the morning but the risk is greater and losses go up. I have yelled and screamed while banging on a pot or pan, works sometimes. Of course the neighbors think I'm crazy!

I know some guys who own & fly Orientals or Catalonians because BOPS can't catch them. After a while the BOPS gve up on birds for food.
