Put them on diet before letting them out the first time. Fat birds are lazy and easy prey for the BOP.
I put them on straight wheat and limited diet for a week before letting them out for the first time after the 5 month Winter lockdown.
Plan your first release day and give no food or minimal food the day before. You want them hungry. They will be lazy the first few times out, and you do not want them developing bad habits of sitting in the trees.
It will take weeks to get them back where they were. Some birds just do not fly right again. They are culls in today's world of lockdown. You do not want to pass this traits on.

Good luck with them

I`m going through the same thing here, only worse. I have breeders that havent shown me what I want the last couple years and I`m also re-flying them this year. I have birds in 2 kitboxs that are banded 04,05,06,07, and 08. Mostly 08 birds, but a few of each other years.

I fed them straight milo for 3 days then a mix, all at about 2/3 ration for 2 weeks. Left them no feed the day before the first fly, and was surprised they all kitted fairly well. I havent lost any ,yet.

They are starting to show some roll. Flown every day for over a week now. Rested them first time yesterday and will fly again today. Hoping to see something better.

Now, I`ll go to straight wheet on rest days and mix on the fly days. I`ll have to see if 1 rest day works better or 2.

Two days is not much time to get back in shape.
I always expect that they at least take to the air. I try to be patient with them as far as coming down early.

I prefer to crate them up and make them fly half a block to a block as apposed to flagging. I have trained some to sit in the tree rather than the loft top.
I usually have a couple that just become lazy after a lock down. To me they are culls. I can't have them teaching the rest of the kit bad habits.

Spring is here and my birds have been locked down for 4 months. I'm here is califoria and just got back in the hobby last August. I know we will always having problems with BOP but is it safe to say now is the time to fly and start getting the birds back in training? I have a few young that are around 10 weeks old that I'd love to start training yet I would hate to losse them right now to the BOP. Anyone in Northern California Solano county area that can give me a yea or nea to let them out?

Keith good post..

Be patient with your birds if they were in lock down for a while, if they were train right before lock down they will be right back to where you had them with time.. some will not roll like they use to .you will see that those are the one with more control and when feeling like letting go they will. the one with less control they will roll the same day or next.but remember don't look for good roll they are feeling them self out again getting a fill of things again. in about a week or so they should start getting some wind back and kitting and feeling good about being out .now it can take longer for birds who have been lock down in a kitbox with no exercise, see mines get to fly around the kit pen in circles every now and then as I chase them for an exercise..plus I never let them get fat when resting so they are semi semi in shape..so when they out and about they are concentrating on the brain part like kitting and rolling.just let them out the first day on their own see who wants to fly, now you can see who really likes the sky.the next day when they come down put a bath pen out let them get their kinks out .they be back to where they were in no time..if after you see they just don't wanna work for you open the kitbox throw in a hat or balloon they be out in the sky before you know it.. now they will soon realize that you not just the feed master from all these weeks feeding them through lock down but that you are the kitmaster .and they must get out and kit..have fun....----------

Brett, I just started flying my birds on Friday and they have been on lock down since November. I have the most of them back to what they were since they were locked down (I am actually very surprised)and I have about 10 that are having issues I think they are just like me a little too fat!..lol.. Ok, let's get serious it takes them about 2 weeks to get it going again and you will also have some that are just worthless after lock down.

Maxspin, great post bro! Right on...

That good to hear Brett soon they be kitting again.sometime if I have two that bank anywhere I check to see if their nest mates because I notice they hang together like hey hommie what you doing or you going to that tree wait I go with you..so I throw that one out alone the next fly with the team with out feed. but keep his buddy in, then when I have him in check I switch him ..then both goes out with the whole team .I know alot of folks don't go through this trouble but believe me its no trouble for me I love training in every way I can when they young but most important keep notes . good luck..
