jnyce -rec red is short for recessive red and that is a factor that is found in pulling a wing open on some blue bar or blue check birds and at the quill you can see the red factor on the feather. If you breed two birds that carry that factor you could get recessive red self birds . Red check will carry recessive red also but blue check you can see it at the quill.JDA

Jnyce,

Rec Red is a factor that makes the bird appear solid red (brick red). Red check and red bars are two patterns of an ash red colored bird. T-check is when the check pattern is so dense on the bird it makes the bird nearly solid colored. Think of check like a checkerboard. A t-check would have checkers on every square of the board with not much background color showing through. A regular check would have only half the squares on the board covered with checkers. Recessive red is not a true color. The bird genetically could be a black or blue check but it had two inherit a recessive red factor gene from both parents in order to express. You can also have lavender which is the spread factor of ash red. Google Frank Mosca pigeon genetics if you're interesting in learning about the colors and factors. It's interesting.

Jerry,
That appears to be ash red in checker pattern.
Recesive red is just that, recessive. It takes a gene from eachparent to fully express it. A single dose will often but not always be expressed as bronze like pumpkin described. Ash red is identifiable by the ash color of the tail and flights. It comes in various pattern bars and checks. If spread is present, ash red becomes lavender. Ash red is also a sex linked gene. A female can only express one or the other ash red or blue, while a cock can have both, 2 ash reds, 2 blues or 1 each. Ash red is dominant over blue. Recessive red is epistatic, meaning it covers, not changes, the base color ash red or blue. Rec. red doesn't show pattern.
