Pensom Import --- AERC-66-997

This was reportedly an excellent pre-potent hen from England that was brought to the United States by Mr. William Hyla Pensom (Bill Pensom) and bred by Bert Goode.

QUESTION: Does anyone around here (especially the U.K. fanciers) know who flies a family of rolling pigeons bred down from Mr. Goode?

Marcus:

You are chasing a ghost here......(2) cocks off the hen
NPA 68 AK 990 bred by Wright Miller & the cock bred by Pensom, NBRC 68 1220 are the (2) best birds bred off the hen and behind many lofts in the Los Angeles Area. The Hen is 40 years old and the best person to ask about her maybe Wright Miller...He lives somewhere up north in the Bay Area I think. Laron may have more info on the hen......I would put more stock in the pair that produced the (2) cocks than the hen herself. A thought for you, breed the best you have and when you see the real deal go for it.... Glenn

Glenn, the last sentence says it all in a nutshell, funny myself I "never" think of any pigeon outside of my loft let alone long dead pigeons.

There you go Marcus. Thanks Jerry...Did you breed anything out of her? Please post her picture if you ever find it......Marcus ask away if you have any questions....This may not answer your question about Bert Goode & his family of birds.. you may have to ask the U.K. Guys directly.........Glenn

Glenn - I hope you are doing well.

Marcus - I think I mentioned to you before that I have a letter from Barratt and other information regarding the origins of all of the imports including the one you mention once print begins.

Thanks Jerry, Scott, LaRon and Glenn. I am a glutton for history.

So my focus should be on those 2 cocks bred down the line from NPA 68 AK 990 (bred by Wright Miller).

.....and

NBRC 68 1220 bred by Pensom.

Hmm.... this 1220 is becoming more and more familiar to me.

LaRon did you get my email?

{P.S.} Jerry.... I phoned you a few years ago enroute to San Bernadino (to a fly) and you were rather busy at the time.

....well anyway

When I was a teenager I recall a 60ft Champion Black Self of yours displayed in a Special Roller edition of the American Pigeon Journal.

QUESTION: What ever became of that bird in the APJ?

Marcus,
I don't know whether anyone who knew Bert is still alive, but I have heard George Mason mention his name.
I think you guys know more about the history of the English birds than we English do.
Pete.

Hi Pete...

I'm simply trying to breed from the best genetically structured roller pigeon possible. As a breeder, trainer and flyer... the first thing that often comes to mind is biogenetic engineering in the field of Orinthology (study of birds). If the goal is to have the best gene pool available.... then we must seek those birds out.

Several years ago I had bred some Plona's in the 40ft-60ft range with nice style & velocity, but had lacked the necessary frequency required to score big.

....so

I strategically decided to play around with the genes in order to obtain more frequency. I crossed some Reed-Higgins blood into my pigeons and have actually realized a very big difference in breaks. Just a successful bio-genetic experiment if you were to ask me.

NOTE: A gene is an instruction containing a biomoleculer section of the long, double-stranded helical molecule of DNA which contains specific instructions for some specific function such as making a protein.

Now in regards to rolling pigeons, it's the biological codes within the ro-gene that I ultimately seek. Keep in mind Pete that ro-genes are a special type of genetic protein matter containing biomolecular dynamics which causes certain types of pigeons to tumble or roll in flight.... or in the case of parlors on the ground. It's like the bird is having an epileptic fit or something.

Hmm.... interesting isn't it.

Okay Pete... need to get back to my laboratory (warehouse/garage) and continue my in-depth research on the Birmingham Roller pigeon.

Key words,Marcus,, we can still create other strains within the strain and still maintain the same good qualities , dosent say improve qualities,
Quit trying to reinvent the wheeel,they where great rolloers then and they still are,How fast can you make them roll?

Just breed your best to best and wach them fly and sit back and enjoy.

Hi Glenn...

After spending over 30 years observing performing roller pigeons.... I can honestly say that the very best method in trying to have a top-notch family of Birmingham Roller pigeons can be achieved by:

====> "Breeding Best to Best"!

....but

With all the different roller families out there [Pensoms, Hilton & Smith's 514, Plona's, Turners, Jaconettes Black Rain, Higgins, Ruby Rollers, McCully, Masons ...etc], there's bound to be a slight difference in performance levels and family characteristics.

...therefore

We as breeders, trainers and flyers must find a particular family (foundation) that works well consistently in the air... and eagerly start the groundwork towards success from there.

Allow me the undeniable privilege to leave you with a valuable quote from Mr. Pensom:

"Once a strain is established, we can still create other strains within the strain and still maintain the same good qualities" --- William Pensom

Marcus:

Remember that [Pensoms, Hilton & Smith's 514,Plona's, Jaconettes Black Rain, Higgins, McCully birds are all Pensom birds."Breeding Best to Best"! is a quote you should follow instead of chasing pedigrees. You may not think you are, but the questions you ask and the things that you post are saying that you are. Start the process of breeding in your backyard the champion you seek with all the qualities you are looking for. Enjoy your birds in the process and again don't try and reinvent the wheel, work on breeding the Brimingham Roller the way it is supposed to be bred......Glenn

Hector my man... the specific word we are looking for here is;

====> P-E-R-F-E-C-T-I-O-N!

I agree with you 100% in that we must improve the quality, speed (velocity) and tightness on the roll.

....however

I'm not trying to re-invent the wheel... but merely trying to perfect it.

Hmm... let me give you a prime example of what I'm referring to.

Do you remember back in the 70's and 80's when the homies used to put those 16 inch rims on their cars. Sure you do. Okay... now they are putting the shiny 20 inch rims on their cars in search of perfection.

Are you with me here on this?

That is my approach. The 20 inch rims are what I'm rolling with the high rollers and deep spinners (instead of those 16 inch rims) and the ultimate goal for me is perfection. We can talk about it again later bro.

Glenn... I'm not chasing pedigrees. I'm seeking information and knowledge.

===> "Knowledge is Power"!

Knowledge is the antidote to fear and ignorance is not bliss, it is oblivion.

Hmmm...

I would rather buy a good performing bird that rolls hard and fast (in the 30ft range) from a 12 year old kid.... than blow my hard earned $$$$$ on a crappy bird with a pedigree from a renowned breeder, trainer and flyer. Just my 2 cents.
