johnnie,
Remember that youngsters will only do what you allow them to do.Example, flying to rooftops, wire, etc.,only to look down to you and wonder.Pigeons are very habitual, bad habits will be very hard to break later on.
Train them to your landing board and through the trap door. When you are training them to the landing board and they fly just above it to the kit box roof, quickly snatch them off the roof and let them fly to the landing board only.Giving pigeons even as much as a minute to ponder,is time enough to engrain a bad habit. Get youngsters weaned and on the wing, the faster the better. If a youngster does not gain enough flying height to kit,you might have a roof topper. It's impairative,to get young flying and kitting and trapping.
Once the birds are flying in the kit, keep their wing speed as close to a butterfly action as possible. This is condusive to flying a good pattern and setting up to roll or perform at this stage.
If they are flying too low and too fast, fly them 2 to 3 times a day,it will break them of that.
Control the birds, don't let them control you. Also beware of nestmates, don't let them play you, split them up immediately and train them seperate, before any habits are formed[example:camping out together, seperating from the kit,etc.].
Hope this helps....Aloha,Todd

Gentle Johnnie I would ask Cliff Ball how to fly the turner birds. All families are a little differant. I would just watch the pattern they are flying tin the sky..No turning only on the left or right wing..one direction. Fly them alot twice a day at first then once a day when they kit, trap good... then cut back to flying every other when the young kit starts to lift at this point they are getting in great shape..going every other day will increase the roll in them. That is what I do with my birds what you with another family is another thing. I have heard guys that go some where for three day and then turn birds out and find them all on the ground...if this happens.. get rid of the birds and start over with another family. bwinward

Hi johnnie, Yes,I live on the windward side of O'ahu. The hobby has picked up over here in the last couple years and is growing.A few years ago we were not really breaking over 50 points in a fly.The birds and the scores are getting better. We have had some good mainland fanciers help us along. If you ever make it out this way, look me up...Aloha,Todd aloharoller@yahoo.com
