It seems to me that judges always stand when judging. Why don't they sit or lay down when the oportunity is available to judge? --------- Just My Take On Things

It is usually because they want to keep their eyes on the kit at all times. It is really hard to concentrate for 20 min and not miss a turn. It is also hard to keep the kit in sight at all times if you are sitting down. I have a hammock and it works great for me, but I live in an area without a lot of trees.

I have no problem laying on my back if the kit is above and I don't have to shift position to keep the kit in view , you can get wore down pretty quick with many kits, if you can watch girls on the beach on your back you can certainly watch the birds,as long as there are no girls in Bikinis around that is. ---------- Just my Opinion Scott

I lay down to judge. I carry along a closedcell foam pad called a 'sissy pad' to lay on, in case the ground is wet or has stickers. ---------- Jon

I have an altra light swivel chair that I use. If the kit is being blowed around into the far distances is the only time I need to get my fat ass up and chase them down. Normally though, the kit can be judged with nothing being missed from the chair. ---------- Just My Take On Things

We had flown many kit and the sun had started to peek through the over cast skies. Most of the guys had went to the back of the house and were talking about how good the kit was doing. I walked out front and could hear the judge calling out the breaks. I layed down on the moist grass and listened to the Judge call out the rolls. The judge noticed me and came and layed on not far from me as well as his scribe. I fell a sleep for a short time and when I woke I could not find the kit in the sky..It took some time then I found the kit in the opposite direction. I was busy studing the kit in the sky when I realized that I could not hear the Judge calling out the rolls any more......Sure enough both had falled asleep and were just looking about to find the kit..I knew the kit was behind them and had been for some time..LOL If you judging it is not a good thing when the scorekeeper falls asleep as well..LOL I still remind Gary Lancaster about it once in awhile ...he doesn't think it is as funny as I do. His Birds were putting on a good show then went dead for a minute...then back to work again..they missed breaks for sure because the score told the really story. bwinward Bwinward

Now here is another story for ya....Brian Krog came to judge on a windy day. I wasn't going to fly because the wind was really blowing hard. I decided that I would fly anyway...released the birds and they didn't even elevate..just skipping across the ground. They were working on getting some altitude..a few scores then Guil Rand and I looked at each other and wondered why no score. Guil asked Brian about it then he said that there was one to many out birds.........A low flying airplane was in the distance..Guil and I started to laugh and had him take a better look at the out bird..LOL Bwinward

One year the judge in the AERC fly started to judge my birds standing between two sheds. He then looked around him to find a chair, sat down, refocussed on the kit, then blew a sigh as they went out of his sight around his back, so he had to get up again to find out where they had gone to!. Several times during this he stopped looking at the kit for several seconds, and at times he even turned to speak to the scorekeeper. I don't think his heart was in the job,LOL The only time I lay down on the judging job was at an old guys house who hadn't flown his birds for a few weeks due to being in hospital. It was a warm summers day and I gazed at the sky as the whole kit flew about in ones and twos at around 2000ft, but I did him the curtesy of not falling asleep. I actually enjoyed watching the birds as he had good rollers, but on this day not a good kit. Pete.
