Are you asking for breeders, kit birds or birds in storage?

fran, I think you are asking others to do the work for you. My suggestion is if you really want to know what to feed your birds, you should study to get to know something about the general nutritional needs of your pigeons and what seeds and grains provide them. You will find that the amounts of various nutrients differ from one seed and grain to another, impacting what to use and in what amounts.

The proper recipe, your budget, what's available commercially around you and what group you are feeding will determine what you can choose to feed them.

If you are not able to get up the gumption to study and increase your personal knowledge to provide your own answers, go to the local feedstore and buy a prepackaged general pigeon mix for the non-breeders and pigeon pellets high in protein for the breeders.

Take note of the grains used in the mix, take note of the amount of protein, carbohydrates and fat and you can figure out how to mix your own and in what amounts.

paraphrase: "you can give a man a fish and feed him for a day, or you can teach him how to fish and he can feed himself for a lifetime". Hope you take this in the spirit in which it is given...

fran, young kit birds are still growing and need plenty of protein to develop mass and muscle, so give them a general pigeon mix for the first 6 months and fly them allot (5 to 6 days a week). Give them enough so they fly for anywhere from 45 minutes to no more than 1.5 hours at a time. Also, consider that over-fed birds are going to take longer to trap in. So whatever amounts you feed them, they should trap in within 3 to 5 minutes of landing on the kit box.

An older team can consume about 1 to 1.5 tablespoon of 50/50 wheat/milo and do very well. You need to pay attention and learn how adding or reducing specific seeds and grains and modifying percentages can impact the birds flying and performance.

The mix I like to use for my breeders is 2 scoops wheat,1 scoop milo,1 maple peas,1 scoop safflower,1 scoop pigeon pellets and in winter 1 scoop popcorn.
Young flyers-4 wheat,1 milo,one peas,1 safflower.
Mature flyers-4 wheat,1 milo.
They sure do like a handful of hemp seed thrown in once in a while too!
