I think a roller that has tail feather's 1/2in to 5/8in longer than the flights is more likely to look smother in the roll. I reserve the right to be wrong. LOL.

donnie, one day just to see, I pulled all the tail feathers out of a very fast roller. I didn't see any change as far as the stop went.

Jerry, what I'm getting at is that it isn't used as any type of break.
0221 , I like some cast on my birds due to it does smooth them out.

It functions as a rudder, meaning it helps them to steer, especially when landing or flying slow. It has no effect on the roll, or the ability to stop rolling. Ive flown many birds without tail feathers and they rolled the same as before they lost tail feather. I routinely clip tail feathers as a method of marking birds to identify them in the air, no effect.

I think we should breed the birds without a tail sense they make no difference in the performance. So I want to see the genetic guys step up and find a way to breed 'em without tails instead of some stupid color.

I am just being a smart ass; there has to be a reason for the tail that is benefituary to the bird and the roller performance. Even if it is "just a rutter" which I think is important in staying true to the kit. I have noticed that the tails will flex upward at the point they go into the roll; during the roll; and will flare when coming out of the roll. I think everything about a bird is important to the bird and especialy to roller pigeons. It all has to be there and in good condition to give you that top shelf performance we are looking for.

I agree that the tail feathers aid the birds in braking out of the roll, but I too have some of my birds who have missing tailfeathers and are still able to break off out of the roll.

Maby its just me but I personally think that the tail has alot to do with the roll and control of the roll. I mean it effects the birds when they are in the moult so why wouldent it effect them if they were without it? Its just unreal to think that it has no effect on the roll, so I guess it blows the "hole" in the roll thing outta the water...LOL . on the real the tail is important and that is just for me....good luck...

Your right Nick, The tail is very important for something. First it saves a birds life when the BOP catch it by the tail as they can release the feathers to escape. Its like a drenalin thing that they do just like a lizzard does.
Also When I was last visiting with Chan Grover I had noticed in his pictures that the old Pemsom types had a tail about 1" longer than the wing tips. I mentioned it to Chan and he said it makes the hole in the roll.

I remember KGB had talked quite extensively about the cobby rollers aposed to the long cast rollers which he prefered. He could give some information on them also.

I dont think you would see the hole in the roll with out a tail. We all like that hole. Not that we see it all the time though. BIll C

The reason the bird stops rolling when its tail feathers are missing is because it uses its wings to compensate for the lack of tail to stop. What did you think was going to happen, that it would crash to the ground because the brakes went out? LOL God has given the roller pigeon that is missing tail feathers more than 1 way to stop...

List,

Scott is wrong on this one. And he is also right.

The tail certainly does affect the roll. It helps keeps the bird rolling on a straight line, ie. it acts as a rudder.

I had a black, WF go missing about 2 weeks ago when the team got hit up high and broken up. this bird didn;t come back till the next day and I found it hiding under the loft. The tail was completely gone. When I reflew the bird again after a couple of days it looked like a bat. When it rolled, it tends to frift to one side and back again and appears to be trying to stay straight with it's wings. Previous to losing it's tail, it rolled straight.

So, yes, a bird can roll w/o a tail, yes it can stop after rolling without a tail, and yes, th etail does impact the quality of the roll.

Best Regards,

Ken
