Had a bird of my sons that skied out yesterday, came back today but wouldn't trap. I lifted one rung on the trap so he would go in and two others escaped.

They flew up and started rolling, looked awesome. Then about 20 minutes into it, a coopers hawk nailed one of his birds, now the other two are still out there somewhere, and one is lost to the hawk.

What a crappy day. He did get to see his birds roll a little bit, but the hawk taking one of his birds about broke his heart.

Looks like more lockdown for a while.

Coopers suck!!

Hey LittleJohn,How old is your son? If he's a little guy,I'd get him some parlor tumblers. I got a pair for my 5 year old daughter. She walks them around the yard feeding them and loves to show everybody how they flip. I thought they would be good to keep her interested in the birds and hobby until she was old enough to deal with a hawk eating one of "her" birds. Her older sister is 16 now,she used to take it pretty hard when "her" birds got killed and drifted away from the sport. Now she calls me and my pigeon buddies,"Nerds with birds!" Nick

He is 15, he took it hard, but I had to explain to him that "it" happens...he is a tough kid, and took it in stride, just kinda messed me up when he came back carrying a feather....and said...."Dad...there was nothin I could do"....wish I still lived in Utah...hawk attacks there were few and far between. Pennsylvania is full of the dang things.

It was a PITA to watch....hopefully it will move on in a month or so. If not...who knows how many birds we will lose this year.

John, Here in Pennsylvania the hawks do not migrate until May, then you have to turn 1 out to test the skys! That is why I have O.R.s to check for hawks!

I hear ya Pat, it wasn't a planned flight actually. The one of mine and the one of his that skyed out Sunday came back yesterday. They would stand on the trap door but wouldn't trap in, so I got the brilliant idea to open one rung on the traps to encourage them to go in. Bad move on my part.

It worked for my bird, he went right in, so I tried it on my sons kitbox, and two of his other birds came out of the trap....so we dropped that rung and a few minutes later they took off and started flying. They were doing single and double flips and having a great time, then they headed back toward the loft and thats when the cooper nailed one of em. The other two landed on the house....but would not come back to the loft, and they still are not back yet.

I let the trap door down on my empty kitbox, and put some food inside, so if they come home and trap in, so be it, if not...what the heck can ya do?
