I am just getting started and want to do it the right way.
I have read that some people use a long pole and a flag or a bag on it. To either force the pigeons to fly or to keep them up for 15 to 30 minutes. Is this common practice.? How many of you use this method.? thank you Fred

Hey fred, good question I personally flag my birds up but when you starting out you have to be careful its best to let them go up on their own so they don't bank anywhere now if its time for then to be on the wing and they haven't taken to the sky then I don't waste time just do it in a way that it spooks them quickly but don't keep on flagging them put it down ,away .so that they can trust coming back to the loft or you. like I go behind the kitbox swing it fast and drop it then if they want to come down I let them.but make sure they are in a empty stomach because if they bank on a tree they won't come back till the end of the day.
if its their first time up I let them back down and inside for a reward and again the next day.do it early so they have time to come back in the daylight.but you have to have patience very important or you blow it..good luck...at the top there is a search button click on and write flagging birds and you get some old topic of the same subject..good luck.. ----------

I think there is something wrong with your birds healthwise if they wont fly without a flag or pole. There are other breeds of pigeons that require flagging, but I don't believe Birmingham rollers or even homer requires it. The birds are either sick, cull (maybe too strong) or not healthy if they don't want to fly voluntarily. After you open the trap door, they should bolt out like escapees!

in my case i have loads of wires and there are times when i have to "scare" so they can fly. my birds are not sick and i dont have a problem getting them to fly. it all depends on the situation.

For the first 3 days out of the kit box I never flag the birds, and after they have gained strength on the wing a flag will only cause you to mess up a kit, I found that out the hard way. Feed plays alot into the flying style of your birds and if you dont have the feed write the birds may not want to fly, and if you make them fly by flaging them up you stand a good chance of causing the kit to fly circles which kills there performance. A flag should only be used as a starter for getting young birds up, never use one on adult birds. Thats my opinion !

I have only had to use a flag on young birds that were getting a late start because of BOP's. I had settled them as normal but they got used to lounging around on the kit box roof. They only needed to be flagged a couple of times before they got the message that they were going to fly. Most birds should explode out of the kit box when you open the door. This is why I like to have two doors on my kit boxes, one side only for release and the other side for feeding, etc.. Good Luck,

With most groups of young rollers there are usually a few that are more advanced, and will take to the air sooner. My first round are just out on the kitbox top and the odd one or two had swooped around the yard and then gone higher. I like the first few to get the hang of flying, dropping and trapping while the others may just go on the kitbox roof then trap in again. If I think the younger ones have been roofsitting too long I will quickly flag them up. If they are not strong enough for flying very long, I flag them into the birds who have flown and are dropping down. I couldn't let the YB's out for a few days this week because of high winds, and when I let them out today, half of them went up into the air instead of settling back down. I always try and be patient, and find I loose less Yb's by waiting, even though they are often quite strong by the time they first fly properly. I'm sure they will all be flying in the next few days.
I used to lift them on the roof as chubby squeekers, but I lost as many to crows and other vermin, as I now loose to birds flying away.

If I use a pole they will just land on a neighbors roof and I have one neighbor that thinks the world will end if the birds land on his roof.

A very good point that is what I do too and when I see the young birds going else where or looking to drop I call the whole gang down so they get use to the idea of flying together and trapping together....
