So I have been trap training my young birds for about the past 3 or 4 weeks. Put them in a cage, open the trap door, shake the feed can and whistle, and then they go in and eat.
When I first started it, they would mess around and hang out in the cage, and not trap. So I cut back a tablespoon on their food, and presto...now I have their full attention.
I came home tonight, opened the kit box door, pushed em all out, and they landed on top of the shed. I thought....heck I'll let em fly a little bit, and so I went in the shed to get the tennis balls and the feed....and when I came back to the kit box they were all sitting in the kit box, right there at the feeder....lookin at me like....ok...let's have the feed already.
They didn't fly today, but they ate well, and I was happy that they trapped in right away, no whistling, no can shaking...they just flew down, and trapped in.
I think they finally have the idea.
It's a beautiful thing.

I never had to trap train any of my birds ,i read often on how people trap train there young. I Feed and wistle for about a week then i let them out hungry, when i whistle i let them in throuw the main door for the first few days, then i close the door and they usually figure it out in about 5 minutes. If they what to eat, they will figure it out. Hector Coya-SGVS ---------- The more i know mankind, the more i love my Dog,

These birds have never flown. They were squeakers when I got them a couple months ago.
They are from unflown birds, who have not been worked with for the past 15-20 years.
They seem to be very responsive and intelligent, in that they know what I want from them, and they are willing to respond.
I look forward to working with them this year and seeing if there are any among them that will get up there, roll, do it right, and behave the way that we like them to.
So far I am liking what I see.
I will keep you updated on how they progress through the year.
I am not a competition flyer, I am a backyard enthusiast, and I do appreciate all of the tips and knowledge that is shared on this site.
Thanks to all of ya'all.

LittleJohn, The biggest difference between a comptition flyer and a so called backyarder is that some are about 1/2" taller or 1/2" shorter. You love your birds just as much, you go without so they can eat, you find time to clean their pen and your dreams are just as big!!! Enjoy your birds and please do not think any less of yourself if you choose to stay in your own yard. Only the best for you and yours! Thom

LittleJohn,
This is Rod from the other forum. I use sputniks trap and my birds only need 3 days of trap training and that's it. I don't know what kind of traps you use, but if it is a bob trap, then I can understand. Birds are hesitant on those. I used to use that, then drop trap, then the current one (sputniks).
My birds learn to associate feed sound in one week. I whistle then drop some feed. I whistle again, then drop the feed. I know that my birds learn to associate my whistle after I do this experiment: I whistle, but don't put the seeds on the tray. If they drop from their perches after whistling, then I know they already associated the call. If they don't drop from their perches after I whistled, then they are not yet trained. It is a simple test for me.

I put my birds in the landing board cage and close the trap. They are all in by dark the same day. The next time they go in when they want. When I remove the cage after about 5 days and kick them out they land on the board and trap right away..

I think the reason this works well for me is that most squeakers seem to be afraid of being outside at first and want the security of the kit box..
