Butch , they got like 79 points or so for 3rd I think, they werent stiff , just went too high to judge. Brent Timius won with 205 which was good to see, the fact is if you qualify it is just one more chance to look silly LOL . ---------- Just my Opinion Scott

The Government says:
1) No kissing until the Human-Swine flu virus outbreak is under control.
2) Don't travel to Mexico (unless absolutely neccessary).
3) Wash your hands thoroughly with soap or use an alcohol based hand gel cleanser.

HEALTH & SAFETY UPDATE:
Incredible! Only 2 Swine flu deaths have been recorded in United States history. There are currently 40 cases of the Human-Swine flu in the U.S. and the CDC says human-to-human transmission is causing these influenza outbreaks.
NOTE: Mexico has shut down all of their schools nationwide and nearly 200 people have died in the nation from the Human-Swine flu outbreak so far. Very terrible situation in Mexico City.
Link provided below with more information on Human-Swine flu. World Health Organization has raised its pandemic alert for swine flu by one level to phase 4, two steps short of declaring a full-blown pandemic. ================================================== ================================================== Marcus Deep Spin Lofts

Tough break, Scott....Sounds like Clay's kind of problems. I'll have the reverse....trying to get them up if this heat sticks around...it's been 88-90 degrees. They have been flying at a good height an doin' the time during training in the early mornings. They're lookin' good if I don't shoot myself in the foot or get weird weather blowin' in. Cliff

Scott, Cliff We can prep and do everything that we think is right but come fly day it can turn and bite us in the arse. Its the challange to get things right that keeps us going i think. Here in kansas for the month of april so far i've been able to fly as of today 8 times the wind has been relentless and so has the bops. I've lost 6 birds out of my a and b team this month alone. I lost 4 birds in late March. Doesn't look good here. Jim Bowen

Hi Scott. Not sure what birds you are working out of but sounds like from some previous posts you are working out of the so called hard core old Pensom blood lines, like I have from Doug and Don Ouellette. Doug told me from the start that flying old bird kits is a challenge. Keeping them down has been a big one for me. Especially this time of year here in Vegas with light air and updrafts that old birds can easily ride without effort. Each April seems like the same old story, trying to keep the birds down. My old bird team is from 2 years old to 7 year old birds and hard to manage. Have tried the Don Ouellette school of thought that if they fly too high then don't give them anything until they stop doing so. A few others have told me that to keep them fat and the weight keeps them down. I have had more success with giving them nothing until they stay at a managable height. But cutting them back to 30 - 40 minutes fly time also seems to cut their performance considerably. I know there is a fine line between having them cut back too much on fly day vs. flying too high. I have hit that fine line leading up to flys but only once have I hit it on fly day, and then the falcon spoiled that outcome! Do you experince more problems with high flying in Spring then the rest of the year? I experience in late Spring and then to a lesser extent in October here as those times of year have quick changes in temperature one way or the other soon after the sun comes up. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results. I feel insane each Spring when I experience high flying again. Though I have tried some different things but apperantly not enough of a change as here it is 2 days from our fly and my birds aren't down where I want them to be. I've lost 6 birds from my #1 team leading up to this fly, 2 to falcons and I blame myself for overflying the others. 3 exceptional birds gone. We pay a high price for our mistakes in this hobby. I agree with your statement that the birds were mismanaged if they skied out, especially on fly day where we have aimed towards peak performance specifically. I always take the blame instead of blame the birds, though sometimes weather and BOP's can take some of the blame as well. Much easier to fly young birds then old birds, but I love the challenge of flying a great team of experienced old birds that can really show their stuff if given the right opportunity. Can be very frustrating for a little gratification, but it is worth it to me. Best of luck on the next opportunity to compete. Just wanted to share my experiences as this subject definitley hits home with me! Sincerely, Don M. Mac's Rollers Las Vegas Roller Club

Scott, How far out did you use the red cell? The jury is still out, as far as I am concerned, on using that stuff before competition. Anyway, my hat's off to you for taking responsibility for your results. It's much easier for some guys to blame the RD, the schedule, the judge, etc. instead of admitting that we just mismanaged them. Except for BOP and severe weather like Jim B is dealing with, the results we get are of our own producing. Cliff

Don, these birds probably go back the same way , and yes as old birds they are a major pain in the ass,but when all is right I have never seen anything better. Spring for me is also bad, my best fly time is late Fall and Winter here as I don't have the lift. I live in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas and there is a lot of lift and instability,to top it off thunder bummpers just get backed up off the Sierras and you get different layers going different ways, yea lots of fun. For me the best control comes from truely working the yo-yo system which is what it was designed for, also I want to keep wt on them. I had good control on these birds and didn't need to do anything to these birds, just for giggles though I just tinted the water with red cell on thurs and didn't change out on Friday, it cost me and it was a bonehead move.

Scott, Explain red cell? Jim Bowman is right about the weather here for past two months. Like him I have had problems with the wx and BOP but birds are fighting their way thru it. And to make matters worse I spent the last 3 days in the hospital with a cardiac problem so they were way overfed by the time I got home. Hopefully, I will have them ready to go next Saturday as I am first out of the door in our region. ---------- Keep em Spinning Joe

Good luck Joe, with the fly and the heart problems. We will make it to Kansas, but not sure we will make it that far north by 7 am. We will try though!
I live in N. central Okla., and we're getting the same weather, wind, rain, wind, rain, ect.ect.! Thought my birds were tuned in fairly well, but Tues., they wen't straight up, didn't see em again for 2 1/2 hrs. Thought they were gone for sure!
Hope this weather changes soon, I fly the day after you at noon! Best time of the day for feeding sharks here! LOL ---------- Val

Thanks for the reply Scott. I tried something last minute last year, but it was the opposite of a boost such as red cell, which I have heard of but never tried. I ended up with 4 birds that couldn't handle being broken down and the rest could handle. Does you no good when 4 birds drop out and land after 4 nice breaks then the rest continue to kick butt. So I too made a bonehead mistake and DQ'd for my first time ever in competition. Thanks for reminding me not to try anything different as I have tomorrow morning to feed before our fly. Today I had 2 falcon attacks and to top that, a swarm of bees landed in the tree behind my kit boxes and actually chased a few of my birds when the landed on the lower wire! What timing on that! Amazing what can happen leading up to fly day! But I'm still having fun! We'll see what happens Saturday on how much fun I am having! Thanks again
