This was an old topic that came up a couple of years ago, but can't find it. Since it is storm season, I was curious to what anyone thought of this old tale. It came up in a conversation that I was having with a veteran flyer tonight and he believes it can have an effect on eggs going bad.

Last time this thread came up it was storm season here and we were having a lot of storms. I lost several eggs during this time and wondered if this could of been the reason. Also, there was talk that chicken farmers years ago would put cast iron or steel under the nest and it would help protect the eggs. Seems like it was the static from the lightning that would effect the eggs, but can't remember.

Can anyone remember this thread and what was actually said?

I don't remember the thread but this years weather was rough and this was the first time I was having problems with my eggs and I live in California, that was the first 2 1/2 months but I think now all my birds are in the cycle. The eggs weren't bad just in fertile and the birds are rather young 2 and 3 years old.

Val, I think the thunderstorms out here just put more roll on my birds...JK...LOL.. I have not experienced the same, as the weather is horrible out here as well.

Val My mother in law would never set a hen with out cast iron things close to the nest. Her mother did the same thing. It may be an old wives tale but some of those old wives tales theres more to them then people think. In the 90s here in kansas we had terrible storms. I think 91 or 92. A friend of mine had birds from me and had them paired up. I paired mine up at the same time. Both his and mine were all bad. My wife mentioned it to my mother in law and she told my wife about the cast iron thing. My wife told me and i about fell over laughing. Well the next round I put cast iron things out on top of my nest boxes and in the boxes. I didn't tell Dave my friend about it. Well his and mine layed there second round and sure enough more bad thunder storms the town actually flooded. All Daves eggs were bad again but mine were ok. You never know there could be something to this. My Brother in law in tennessee has a friend that raises golden seabrights. I'm going to have him call the guy and ask him if he's ever heard of it.
