I am looking for a description about how to interpret quality and depth. Have anyone see something.

Quality

1.0 weak-nopunch,slow roll but adequate to score
1.1 more than adequate-medium speed,soft roll
1.2 fair-a bit soft, but decent roll
1.3 good-hard roll, starting to crank
1.4 very good-quick, snappy,leaning towards spin
1.5 excellent-knifing spin
1.6
1.7 outstanding-knifing down,sharp,semi-blur
1.8
1.9 truly phenomenal-shows small hole, shrunken blur

depth multpliers:
distance: 1.0= 10ft
1.1= 15ft
1.2= 20ft
1.3= 25ft
1.4= 30ft
1.5= 35ft
1.6= 40ft
1.7= 50ft
1.8= 60ft
1.9= 70ft
2.0= 80ft

Before You start tearing this up, offer something else.

The above information is not W.C. rule's or guide line's. It was writen by Don Ouellette.

As a rule of thumb as a MINIMUM starting point we have always used

1. x wing or better
2. clean roll,no wingswitch or glitch
3. come out of the roll clean and proper
4. fast enough not to be able to count the revolutions.

take the above and apply it along with birds breaking simutaniously and now the best teams of Birmingham Rollers will take the day, and good luck with a silly score.

Hi 0221

you're format is that per individual bird or per average of the kit. I see you judge depth in foot will you be able to translate that for me into seconds. Also will it be OK to judge depth with a stop watch?

Thank you.

Let me just add. These multipliers are "AVERAGES" of "ONLY" birds that were scored during the time they were in judgement. The depth multiplier is only a single judges "ESTIMATE", and that can, and will vary from judge to judge. The same can be said of the quality multiplier. These sliding scales are dependant on the experience of the judge and visual clarity of the distance and conditions at the time the birds are in judgement. When we assign distance and a speed/velocity/wing position to a specific multiplier, we must take into consideration there may be a large "RANGE" of opinions and over-lap. These assigned numeric values are not set in stone and will differ among different judges. The only exception would be the minimum depth standard and it is suggested to be 10 feet. But we can not be 100% certain about any depth "ESTIMATE". All these NUMBERS represent the judge's average estimate and nothing more and that also applies to the break counts....only estimates! There are few, if any, absolutes, involved in the use of the multipliers.

0221,
Many more do that than fly in the competitions, but if you fly before a judge or if you don't, both are very rewarding in there own ways. I think there is no better way to learn how to get the most out of our birds, than set them up for a specific time on a specific date. BOP and weather are the wild cards. It is a game we play with Rollers, some are better at it than others, some live in an area where there are few BOP, some live in an area with many BOP. I encourage all men to have their birds evaluated by the judge as often as possible...... FOR THE SPORT OF IT! The Scores are just there to rank the flyers positions. As in any competition, there are winners and there are kits that don't win. Few of us, will ever be a Professional Football quarterback but we can all enjoy watching the game.

Interpreting quality and depth will always be subjective until there is a "universally understandable" standard set in place, particularly with quality. Quality will always be hard for some to agree with because a judge has to average the good with the average. A few excellent birds on breaks of otherwise average birds doesn't mean the overall quality is high as the excellent birds. I put speed and no wings showing at the top of the quality chart.

For depth it is much easier, BUT, it is also the most misunderstood value. There are guys who will judge a kit that is flying directly overhead, and because they cannot "see" the separation, they have a difficult time determining the depth, and most end up calling them too short. There are no telephone poles 400 feet in the air, no trees 400 feet in the air, and none at a 45 degree angle, nor straight overhead. The universal tool to determine depth is TIME. It is the same for every kit.

Brian - I think you could have said "Interpeting quality and depth will always be subjective" and left it at that(LOL). A universally understood standard sounds good, but the view of the judge still comes from behind his own eyes and using that same brain he has always had. Judging rollers will always be subjective and will just have small tinges of objectivity.

Yes, I will be glad to meet you as well. This is the only way (along with the NBRC Fly) that I get to meet those people in the region. It is a positive thing for me in every way.

Sal,
I plan to follow Nick and Ferrell out to Jim's and then to Norm's. Probably won't go any further than that as this is prime walleye fishing time.
