Does anyone have advice for homing adult birds to a new kit box? Should I tape or soap their flights? How long should the process take? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I know a lot of guys here do well with the tape, but I tried it once and it came right off, up and away they went. I wont try it again myself.

I have a friend that homed in several birds with soaping the flights and claims he has only lost one in the last couple of years. That is the way I would go about it myself. JMO

Good luck what ever you decide!

Karen:
With a new bird, I would try tying or taping the flight feathers of ONE WING only. If you tape both wings they can still fly a bit but if you do it right with only taping the one wing, they can't fly very well.
If you are trying to home your own birds, then taping shouldn't be necessary, just keep them very hungry for the first few times that you let them out of their new quarters and they should easily trap.
Hope this helps, Geo.

Can anyone show a picture of how to "tape them up"?

Thanks

John, just tape their feathers on the wing together so they cannot fly!just so they cannot spread them out for flight!

I tried the tape thing on new birds after 21 days let them out for 3 days all trapped in every time i called took tape off 5 of 8 roll 2 to 3 times then gone 3 day later 2 of them return. if they are your birds 3 day of tape should do it if someone else I would do it for a week - tape 3 flight feathers together with masking tape i used box knife to get off easy-- GOD BLESS!!!!

the tape works good, you do only 1 flight,I like to use masking tape and wrap all the flights on one wing, at least 8 out of the 10. I would wrap several times around.
I have had a better method for birds that are say breeders that have never flown where you live and that is to pull 8 of the flight feathers out on one wing and by the time they grow back they are homed in. This takes as you know 6-7 weeks so you will have to pay more attention to them for a longer period of time.
I have been able to train and home in adult kit birds in about 2-3 weeks with the tape with high success.

I have been using the tape for years and have never had it come off a bird. Two thing that are important with the tape. 1 is it best to use the blue painters tape for the main reason that it doesnt stick to the feathers as much. The other is to give them a couple wraps around I use 4 feathers and squeeze it together to ensure it sticks together well. the blue tape unwraps easily when you want it off and doesnt pull the feathers. I use medical paper tape over three or four flights that is cut 1/2" wide. Then over the medical tape I use a layer of blue painters tape cut 3/8" wide to lock it all together. The paper tape has a very light glue that will not stick to the feathers so there is no damage. When ready just cut the whole thing off. I only tape one wing so they are off balance. Remember that any bird that is taped and outside is helpless.
