----- August will be a year I've been back in the hobby. Made the mistake of not putting my main loft on legs or bricks. My loft floor is 2X4 framed with solid plywood floor. My kit boxes are on legs mess floor 30 inches off the ground. Friday I noticed 2 baby mice playing behind my loft one of them went down in a hole in the dirt underneath my loft when it saw me which tells me that there may be mice living underneath my loft. Although I've noticed no holes in the floor nor walls I'm sure they can get in my loft. Don't want to use any of the decon pellets to try and get rid of them for fear they may eat them then get in my loft and poop which my birds might eat the poop and be poisoned? I have 7 pairs in my loft sitting on last round of eggs. I will be done with my breeding once these eggs hatch. Does anyone have any suggestion for getting rid of these mice until I can either build a new loft off the ground or raise the one I have. I hear these mice aren't good to have around the birds they carry diseases. All information anyone can give me will help greatly. ~~~~~~Butch

As a general rule, for every mouse you see in daylight hours, there are ten more you can't see. Cut up some 2" PVC tubes into sections about 16" long. Put your pellets or Bar Bait in the tube and put it in the corners. I keep bar bait in all my lofts. The birds don't eat it.

I just had the same problem this year... never had it last year.. but this year when I went outside to smoke a square at night I saw a mice running under my individual breeder's cage.. I only thought there was one... .. went to walmart to get a mouse trap.. set up 4 around the coop and the next morning.. 3 mouse dead.. and got one with the mouse trap every night agian for about the next 3 days.. so.. there was 6 total that I caught.. that's a lot and I am glad I got rid of them.. haven't seen any yet... I perfer the mouse trap that snap and kills them to the one with the glue trap.. cus I rather see them dead then kill them myself.. JMO...

The area where I leave in a mouse haven! I use bar bait, snap traps, and Tin Cat mouse traps. The Tin Cat traps work great. A big glob of peanut butter inside and you will trap a number of mice at a time. The only bad side is it doesn't kill them. I drop the Tin Cat in a bucket of water and then have to dispose of the dead bodies. Not alot of fun but effective. Once you have mice, whether one or two, you better get on a regular program of baiting, snap traps, whatever and keep it up or they can quickly get out of control. Another challenge of having fun in this hobby! Say cheese!

Butch, if you're using D-con or bait bars dont worry about secondary poisoning to your birds or other animals, They metabolize the toxicant not poop it out. However, if your using strychnine on grain, then you should be cautious.
Whatever you do, you need to keep the mice under control or else you're asking for disease and sick birds. Store your feed where it is inacessible to mice. Metal barrels or garbage cans with lids work well. Dont leave extra uneaten food lying around. ---------- Jon
