I've been working with my YB's for awhile now and they trap instantly when I call em. My problem is for the last 2 weeks they have had open loft for half hour each night, but now they come out and land on the loft roof or house roof or in the yard to forage around. How do I get these guys up and flying for their excersize as opposed to being lazy?
Thanks, mb5322 Matt

Do as Ken suggested and once back into the swing no more open loft ,let them know its business from now on,,open loft on rest days or bathing time.because they use up their energy in open loft and don't want to fly..good luck..---------- Ralph.
Life comes down to the choices you make, and then living with the results.

There are some families that are hard to manage.Couple that with staggered ages and relaxed management it's disappointing not to mention time consuming.
You can box them up to make them fly around, and eventually they land on the roof and come back home.I guess that's alright, they are flying at least, even though they are acting more like homers ,than a kit of rollers.
If they are acting like late developers, work them every once in awhile and focus them a pair at a time.Once you have 2 or three acting some what normal, keep adding one by one.
The ones that are the laziest and the biggest problem, let them be the last ones to be tossed. You will need to do this till they get stronger on the wing and show some hope of being salvaged.
Flagging the birds has it's some drawbacks, but it can work it's way in as an effective tool.Splice some thin flexible yet rigid lengths of hardwood together.Add a pole whip at the top, bind it to the pole with duct tape or whatever suits. Finally add some satin cloth for a flag or several at different positions, on the whip.Don't over use the pole flag, and get in a visible part of the yard to let them know you mean business.
Young birds need to be scolded just like children, when they land where they are not supposed to.A sharp whistle,a prolonged stare and a bobbing of the fanciers head to single them out to keep them thinking and wondering what is appropriate.
It will probably take just as long as they are old,if not longer,[hopefully sooner]to break this habit. They need to get much stronger on the wing,in order to elevate and follow some type of acceptable formation, when flying. This is a very long process, but there should be some glimmer that will keep you going.
Don't be afraid to do this, because you are also traininig yourself, and when these bums come along you will have the skills to turn them around for the better.....Aloha,Todd
