I have heard that the Kit that does the figure 8 while flying are the better working birds.I have seen this to be true with my young birds. When they do the figure 8 they seem to set up more for the break. What causes a kit to sometimes do it and some days will never change direction. Is this a feed thing,Learned behavior or what? Thanks,David

Hi David,
It is both.
If you feed a kit to much and get them to strong they tend to fly in circles.
If you let this behavior go on as you trian a kit from the begining it is a learned experence and will continue to want to fly like that.
If you use mixed aged birds in your kit you will have birds that are not developed and will lag behind and cause abnormal behavior.
Start your kits out within 5 days of age and it will work out better.
Control the feed can and get them to fly slower with the tails open and they usually work the figure 8's and roll better.

I once believed that flying the figure eight is the best way to have your kit fly. I had seen it several times in a few comps where some of the more active kits were flying an eight pattern. This allows them to set up on the top and bottom of the eight. But now I don't look for the eight pattern, or want it as much as I do "coursing". Coursing as I call it is when the kit floats around at the same altitude with no set pattern. This results in long straight line passes over the house which, if you have seen a kit fly this way you'll agree....the bottom will fall out of the kit! The days my A-team are on, dropping half and three-quarter turns is when they are flying this relaxed coursing pattern around the sky. Figure like if they were flying a pattern like you would draw a star in grade school.
Another thing I learned when a lot of my young birds were flying fast and banking too much was that once they start rolling, the kit will usually slow down. By the time they go through a molt it is as if they go into cruise mode.
