When the WC judge Hannes was with me to judge my kit and we were driving around Las Vegas to show him the sites he talked about how he had only seen 1 kit fly a good figure 8 pattern for the time judged and I believe he said that was Rick Mee's. I'm not quoting him on who the flier was because we discussed alot of things and names so not certain. I hear people say that the English birds fly the figure 8 pattern. My birds have never flown a consistent figure 8. They will at times but it is usually some circles one direction and then the other direction. I know changing directions stimulates breaks. I have only seen kits fly here in Vegas and So. Cal. I have seen a number of the top flyers in So. Cal.s kits, but I don't ever remember any of them flying a figure 8 pattern for the whole fly. Have any of you seen a kit do this for the whole fly? and/or am I taking the figure 8 concept to literal when I say I havent' see a team fly a figure 8 consistently their whole fly. Thanks, Don M.

Don, I've seen many English kits, but seldom do they fly the 8 pattern for the whole fly. The really good kits when on top form will mostly fly that pattern. Heine made a similar comment to me about the U.S kits. A kit that will spiral up to a good working height then adopt the 8 pattern, breaking at both ends of the pattern is a joy to watch, and you know the fancier has put the work in with his birds. When on form my birds will fly the 8 pattern but will often just break at one end only. I think weather patterns during the YB's training period will have a bearing upon what flying style your birds will adopt as adults. On calm days kits are more prone to just flying circles. We seldom get the severe winds in England but we do get breezy weather on a regular basis, and if we waited for calm days we would never get our birds trained. I have lost a few young this year when the breeze has turned into a strong wind. Pete.

hi all don my birds fly a lot like yours mostly in large circles + the odd time in a figure of 8.but like pete says very rare do we see kits flying the whole fly in that way.most of the really good kits ive seen winning comps were the ones flying the fig 8.at the moment my y/brds are on the 1 wing a lot ofthe time which is really frustrating.by the way pete you southern softies might not get the strong winds but us northerners would swap you anytime lol.

Good question Don. I would like to hear from some of the pros on what they do to try to make the figure 8 happen consistently. I was watching my young birds this morning and they did more of this pattern today than they have all spring. Up till now they will fly counter-clockwise for a few minutes then clockwise a few mintutes, then back counter-clockwise a few minutes. Today they seemed to do more of a figure eight and were also more active. I can't really pinpoint why. These birds been on the wing about six weeks flying pretty much every morning at 6:30 a.m. Maybe they are starting to embrace the roll more than resisting it (maybe more confident they can handle it).

Hmmm... that is interesting J. Wanless and Pete. Hannes mentioned the same thing to me as well Don when he was here judging my birds. I asked him what he thought about the pattern my birds put on. He said that they changed wings well. I told him and will probably stick to it... that our birds here in the states are prone to flying in such a pattern more so due to the hawks than any thing else. I could be wrong but I will stick my neck out a little. There is a team right now that I am flying that is prone to flying the dreaded 'S' when low. They are constantly being chased by this female cooper. I fear if this keeps up, the whole team may need to be culled!!

Yesterday while flying my 3 birds I made a point of watching there pattern- you know that for most of the 15 min that they flew figure 8 was what they did was really surprised- 2/ 08 and 1/ 09 birds the 09 is coming in to roll was tail riding but 2 day ago she hit a triple and several singles think she will be a good one. Rollers flying a good figure of 8 comes from the familys characteristics.if you dont have it in the breed you wont get it in the kits you fly .only my opinion ..johno uk ..
