forest68, I would give it a few more days. If it does not hatch the parents will throw it out of the nest and if it does, you will see empty egg shells around the nest. I try to leave them alone until they are a week old and then I check to see if they are bandable.

Then the parents know if they have a bad egg. And will remove the egg on their own? forest68

hey forest, usually I leave them alone for at least two days after the 18th day, sometimes the squeeks take longer to crack open...and on the 18th day just check on the eggs...you should see small cracks on the shell...I remember waiting for this set to hatch and it took like one whole day to hatch...be patient

forest68, Yes if the egg does not hatch within the time period the parents think it should, they will push it out of the nest. Like rockx said, be patient.

Hey Forest, If the hen lays 1 egg then lays the other 2 days later, it could be 19 - 21 days for both eggs to hatch. Also,as the others said above, the pair will kick the eggs out of the nest if they do not hatch in what they feel is the right time.

I always take the first egg out when the hen lays and put in a wooden egg until she lays the 2nd egg then I put it back this way the eggs will get incubate at the same time...I put the egg in a bed of sand or shreaded wood chips and put it in a dark place where the temp is 55degrees and I rotate it 2 or 3 times a day .. make sure your hands are clean if the eggs get dirty when touch it can clog up the pores....all my eggs hatch on the 17 or 18th day and at the same time...

Hey Fellows, One of my Hens laid her egg the 21st of May. (One egg only) Here it is the 9th of June and the egg still hasn't hatched. Should I give her another day or two?

No I didn't candle the egg. Since it was a first time hen sitting, and my first time. I didn't want to upset the apple cart. Wasn't sure how they react when you do something as checking the egg.

forest68, be patient that is only 18 days and it could take up to 21 depending on the time of day she laid and if she waited for the second egg before starting to sit the single. It is a dangerous time to be messing with her egg. She might abandon the egg or if you rotate the egg it could make it harder on the squab to hatch. The best thing to do is just leave it alone and if it does hatch don't try to pick it up for at least a few days. Can't stand not seeing the baby, then just gently lift her or his front slight with your finger tips, take a peek and then leave it ALONE!!!! BIG SMILE! It's hard not to look every now and then but you will do more harm then good.

Question
If you remove an unfertile egg from the hen. How long will it be before she lays eggs and wants to set on the nest again?

forest68, You can usually tell if an egg is fertile without having to handle it. Usually the egg will take on a light blue or darker shade if it is fertile. I dont like to touch eggs because I have had them get broken by a wing slap. Anytime I have pulled eggs the hen usually layed again about ten days later.

Most hens lay within 10 days like clockwork. Once they are in breeding cycle they can lay fertile eggs within about 7 days of you pulling the first eggs. Eggs should hatch 16 days after the 2nd egg is laid, again like clockwork. But I live in a very warm climate here in Vegas so may take an extra day or so to hatch in a colder climate. I candle eggs at 5 days to see if their fertile. This way if I foster them I know I'm not wasting my time and also you can save a week or 2 of wasted time of the pair sitting on bad egges when they could already be laying again. I have never had any birds abandon their eggs when I check them. Like Tracey said, be very carefule when pulling eggs to check them and putting them back as a good wing slap can knock it right out of your hand or then nest.
