Hey All, Just thought I would post a couple of pictures. The first is a 2009 Red Bar W/F cock and the second is a 2009 Blue Bar W/F hen. They were nest mates. I have thirty young birds in the air and they coming along just fine. That wraps up my breeding season, I keep my loft small in consideration of my neighbors.

Thanks all, XRollers it's just the closeness of the picture makes the hen look larger, they are just four months old.

Hey All, XRollers, I took a hard look at the Blue Bar and you might be right. If it is a cock it is very mild mannered. A trait I would breed for! Either way, I like it but it first must make it in the air.

gentle johnnie, A little sugar goes a long way. Give her what she wants first.

Ralph, it's not the numbers but the quality. You are on top of the game and will do alright!

toughrollers, Ralph you have the right stock, you don't need my help! Keep them flying!

Thanks, topnotch.

Donnie, thanks, I appreciate the thought.

Thanks All
Thom

Hey Paul, I don't know any secrets but I'll be happy to share my method. I first start every breeding season by worming my birds and treating them with 4in1 just as a preventive measure. I isolate the cock's from the hens before I mate them up. I use the crown breeding cage and have found that I have to provide a board in the half of the cage not taken up by the nest bowl. I leave this board in until the pair have laid both eggs and then take it out. Otherwise I have problems with fertility because of the wire floor in the cage.

I feed nothing but Purina Pigeon Chow Checkers and fresh grit. I know grit is not supposed to be necessary with the pellets but I let them decide if they need it or not.

I give them Vitamins and Electrolytes in their water on a rotating basis with Bio Pro and A.C.V. I make sure to change out the water every day.

I also make it a practice to keep my hands out of their nest until it's time to band with the exception of candling the eggs after they are a week old.

When I band I give them an additional nest bowl for the next round.

That is about it, I have a few more exentricities but I'll save them for another post. Smile

I do just about the same way you do Thom.except I only give mix.cause thats all I can find here.and also give Garlic..one pair raise 12 baby with two foster to help.I make sure when I breed them again I give a vitamin E pill to the male every other day and cod liver oil to the female and calcium..Paul maybe you can give them that and see what happens....good luck..

Hi Thom,

Hope you are well,
Just would like to ask you is there any reason that you give them vitamins in their water as I also feed my pigeons pellets but thought there was no need to give vitamins as all the nutrients are in the pellet?

Would also like to know how you rotate your Probiotic and your apple cider vineger (ACV) and how often do you give it to your birds. Do you give them straight water?. As I have always given them natural grains and straight water but this year converted to pellets and also trying Prob'tc and ACV.

Thanks Thom your birds are beautiful. Take Care

Hey Ralph, I am stumbling along in the dark trying to learn as I go so please trust your own instincts!

Ralph, you are correct in that the pellets are supposed to contain all vitamins and electrolytes the birds need. Paranoia is my only reason, the powder is cost effective (cheap) and if not needed causes no harm.

I give the Bio Pro every other week to add beneficial bacteria. I mix my water in air tight glass jugs at the start of the week and replace the water in the breeding cages everyday. I clean the water cups as needed or once a week and soak them in a mild bleach solution.

The A.C.V. will help minimize salmonella bacteria. I have only been giving in once a week but on the advice of a top breeder(A real gentleman that was kind enough to help me!)I'm going to use it much more next year. My next years plan is to alternate A.C.V. with Bio Pro.

Good nesting material is as important as anything you can do. What every you use make sure their is enough to form a deep base.

Please remember I'm on a learning curve also, so never accept anything I might say as gospel. Do the research for yourself and decide what works best for your birds.

Hope this is of some help.

Hey Ralph, I have a few additional thoughts. I heat my loft to sixty degrees through the early breeding season. I do this primarily because when you get old and stiff, stuff hurts more when its cold, but I think it also helps with a low mortality rate when the cock starts driving the hen for the next round. With the heat you must also provide good ventilation. I have mine set up so that the air flows from the floor to the ceiling but is not DRAFTY.

To maximize my season I use fosters, three pair for every stock pair, but the fosters I have are all from the same stock pairs. One cock with two hens so they are fosters only if the timing works. If the timing is off, I still have young birds that are in my family and their parents were picked from the air. Not just because they are in the family!

Thanks SPANKY!

I would also like to ask a favor from the list. When asked I try to help but I make mistakes like anyone, so PLEASE, if anyone but especially the more experienced flyer's see that I'm giving bad or wrong advice, step in and correct my well intentioned mistake.

Thanks!
Thom
