Twice now in the last three months I've had my entire loft wiped out due to a raccoon gaining entrance through the recall door in the main loft. Last attack(two nights ago) I lost 50+ birds. I had three birds survive that only to get nailed today about an hour ago(broad daylight) by another raccoon. This time the raccoon ripped the landing platform covering the recall bobs off the front of the loft.
I've been trapping useing box traps and so far in the last few months only managed to nail 2 coons. I can't use anything other than box traps due to the dogs. Otherwise I'd have conibears set up around the loft.
So I need to find a way to setup a raccoon proof recall for these birds....ideas & pictures(if ya got them) would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks,
Matt Rogers

Hey Matt, I use a P.C.V. 4 inch 45 degree drop trap. The birds learn to trap easily and the small opening stops intruders. I still have a drop down landing board that folds up and locks the trap. Not totally varmint proof but better then bobs. Thom

Sorry to hear that Matt. I have experienced this not to that degree, but usually it was beacause I got lazy and left the trap door open. I would add some kind of latch that the coon couldn't open even if I had to put a lock on it. Other than that my advice with the coons is use cannned cat food in your catchem alive trap put it somewhere near your loft. Once you catch it don't relocate it and if you can't catch it. I would try to find some castor bean seeds and mix them in a can of catfood and leave out for the coon making sure your cats or neighbors cats can't get to it. We had saved some castor beans seeds one time because someone told us they kept moles out of the garden and a coon got in the barn where we had stored the seeds in a cardboard box. I don't know how many it takes but we found a coon dead within 20 feet outside the barn, after trying to figure out what killed him we found he'd gotten into the castor beans. So be careful if you use castor beans. The seeds are very poisonous, I'm guessing to all animals.

I've killed 10 raccoons since I posted this on the 8th. All on the burn pile! Ended up putting a conibear trap on the landing door and just inside the loft door along with several conibear traps in baited 5 gallon buckets. For now will be reducing the local population and looking at building a new breeder loft complete with electrified base around the loft and I think we will give the 45 degree PVC a try. That way I only need to worry about mink.

Yup its been a LONG time. Dont think I have the correct phone number for you...give me a call 614-216-5006(Cell). I'll be on the road to Kansas all night tonight to go pickup two of the pups from the field trial trainer, so call and keep me awake!

Sorry to hear about the problem.. You sure must have a big racoon population there.. Here in L.A. in happy to see them. Makes me feel closer to nature. Too bad you didn't try to cook 'em... Val's recipe sounds good.! Plus you could have made some nice coonskin caps. Gomez
