Many use wheat and milo to break the birds down, that is get them fit and flying in the right amount of time ( say 30 minutes ) and keep them on the fit edge for a period of time. This is for competitons flying. YOu do not want your birds broken down or fit for long periods or all summer ect.
You could actually feed anything to them, mix is fine just cut back the feed until they are flying for 30 minutes and if older birds ( say 8 months to 2 years+ ) they will roll more.
You can feed them wheat and milo and increase the feed when not flying for rolling abilities and add pellet, mix or peas to also help keep them from getting too thin or unstable.
Dont go by a certain amount of feed but, feed according to the anount of time they fly. One day will not change them but over a few days cutting back to get them to fly around 30 minutes will give you the most action. Work with them for three weeks and then rest them and feed them up a few days ( say fly one day feed two and fly one and feed two )
Everyone has a different way of doing things but many things are pretty much standard with rollers. A change in feed can infact help bring out the roll more sometimes, but it will not last all year. You need to learn how to work them and rest them. They cannot roll great all year long, Most have overflies due to them being in top condition for rolling too long and they go up, up and away! Bill C

Probably around 6 months or when ever they start to roll often. You could feed them, then fly them every other day when they are 6-8 months old. Put all the ones rolling together and the rest in another kit box and fly them seperately and add the birds to those rolling when they start to roll decent or often.
You really have to try out some feeding regines to see what works the best for you. If they are older birds you can feed the yo yo system. But you want them to have started rolling often before you can really experiment with feed to see what brings out the most roll in them. Remember they will not roll good everyday. They will need a break now and then. Some will always roll but some will do better if you work them into rolling and rest them a few days.
For comps I feed wheat/milo and for about 5 to 7 days flying them everyday until I have the time around 30 minutes and the birds are not rolling much due to flying alot and in shape. Then I rest them and feed a mix for two days and let them out and they seem to roll the best that way for me. Regular flying for me is every other day and once in a while I rest two days and fly one which helps them rebuild and rest. Some will waterfall and roll anytime but to get he most out of them it takes working them up to that point. You will learn most by just trying this way or that way and with some experience you will get the hang of it and get better. Pay attention to what you are doing and make some notes on what you are doing and you will find somethings just work better for you for your climate and birds. Good luck Bill C

Im going to chime in here if you dont mind Bill. I personally feel it is a mistake to try to feed for time. Feed the birds wheat and milo to cut the fat down after building them up and thats it. Feed them a mix of some sort that works best for you the rest of the time. I wouldnt go with anything over 12% for the kit birds and change the rations as needed depending on the fly time and the weather. As for fly schedules I like to fly my comp teams every third day and the young birds every day until they start rolling then I start cutting them back to every other day until they happen to make it to the A team then like I said every third day. Comming into a fly or after a long lay off I will break them down by pushing them out every day but I myself dont use wheat but rather just adjust the portions accordingly. I hope this help and of course you will get a variety of methods but this is what has worked for me for alot of years. Joe
I forgot to mention when I said not to feed for time that instead what you need to look for is that the work rate is steady for the entire time they fly. I have had teams that were in the air for 2 hours and worked as hard the last 20 minutes as they did the first. Work rate is what is important. Not how long they fly. I cant tell you how many times I have seen a kit DQ because a flier was trying to control the fly time. You might get away with it for awhile but take my word on it that it will get you eventually and you will be staring at a big fat DQ on the score sheet.
