hey
I have a grizzle cock bird on a black white flights hen. They have had 3 rounds. He is a red check under the grizzle. Of the young I have 3 torts, and 3 red checks.
Just wonder in if the Torts are male or female. Or if I can tell by the offspring with this pairing. I would think the Torts are hens.
I guess my question is which is more dominant grizzle or spread.

RT, I'm not sure which is dominant between grizzle and spread, but I'm guessing the grizzle. The ash red is definitely dominant so I believe you will find the torts are cocks and the red checks could be either sex. I am not positive on that as I have only a little experience working with grizzle, maybe Brian Mc could step in and answer the question.

RT,
Upon further review, I believe the torts could be either sex also. Don't see a sex link in that pairing.

Grizzle is dominant. It will take a loft over if allowed to. But I really like a nice light tortoishell. I just dont get them. I have some good looking young torts in the air right now that Big Willy bred. I hope they turn out as good as they look. Joe

Trampas,

They are both dominant, but are different genomes. Grizz is dominant over non grizz, spread is dominant over pattern. Niether are sex linked dominance, in other words hens and cocks could occur with equal frequency in either grizz or spread or grizz/spread combo.

The ash red check is however sex-linked dominance. Your 3 red checks could be cocks, definately if they have ticking. If any are blue/black base, they are hens.

Thanks for your responses. All the babies appear red base, I was wondering if the grizzle/spead could be sex linked. It does not appear that it is, so I will have to wait and see what they are.
My son has a turner based Mottle/grizzle cock bird, and the only grizzle off spring were female. I guess that was just luck though?
