I have used a pair of homers in the past to foster several eggs from birds that, for one reason or another, would not sit on the eggs or would refuse to feed the squabs once they hatch. I first let them prove they were capable of being good fosters by allowing them to hatch one round of their own first. After they proved themselves to be worthy, I made them fosters for me. I hope this helps.

When I used them, they kept the squabs fat and healthy! Only problem I had, was it was touch and go for the first 4 or 5 days. If the homers step on them, they are squished! I had to learn not to go near them and spook the parents at all for the first week then if they were alive, they were well taken care of and grew fast!

Sorry, I'm no master, just bored and thought I'd answer!

Another thought, don't house them together. The homers are much larger and they will beat the sharts out of the BRs.

Homers make good fosters. Like Val stated though they are much larger and will smash the young if harassed the first couple days. Joe

Rollers are pretty good parents, why don't you use your extra pigeons?

My foster pair (I ONLY USE ONE FOR SPECIAL PAIRES ONLY
is a West of england feather foot cock and a little grizz roller hen.
They have raised three rounds this year from two diffrent paires and they do a fantastic job.
The reason I use them is bcause the west is my wifes bird and she likes to see him with babies so I let them foster and she thinks there his kids.LOL.
While at the same time the pair the eggs come from can go back down then I can hatch 4 young from the same pair.
It works for meLOL.

Like 0221 stated .
If you have rollers why not use them as fosters???
Of course the best pigeon to foster a roller is a roller.
Why would a roller need anything what a roller carnt give it?????
All you have to do is pair 5 pairs of yearlings up and you have 5 perfect pairs of foster pairents.
No need to bring homers in were there not needed.

Next year I plan on making a place just big anougth for 5 paires of fosters as I am getting close to finding 5 outstanding paires to build my familey around.
So If the young from these 5 paires pull it off again this year then I will start building.
Fingers crossed.
I will still be breeding from my other birds aswell but just having a foster home also.
And the young from the 5 outstanding paires will have there oun kit away from my other birds.
FOSTER PAIRENTS,FOSTER HOME, Next I will be building a pigeon orthanige SOS ABOUT SPELLING
yes its harrison again.LOL.
I hope you guys understand what I plan on doing??
I have said before my spelling and putting words together isnt 100% so pleaser bear with me.

Harrison and 0221. I too believe that rollers are the best choice however I dont like using rollers in an open loft. For the sheer reason is that with another breed if there is an iligitimate mating than you can tell very quickly if it is a cross. Not so quickly unless it is a sex link mating if another rollers is involved. But in individualls I much rather use rollers. Joe
