just joined this forum, and thought i'd introduce myself. after a 30 year absence, i'm getting back into rollers. after 3 years flying portable, we moved from our apartment to a house, but i couldn't keep pigeons, so had to wait til i bought a new house, where i will be able to keep them now. the bug never left, and i would occasionally wander into a local bird store and admire the pigeons and wonder if i'd ever have the birds again. even though my wife thinks i'm crazy and weird, i told her there's nothing stopping me this time. i'm on long island, and hope to meet other locals, so if you know any, please post here or email at sheller@optonline.net. one breeder is willing to set me up with a baby kit of 20, and i'm starting to build my first kit box this weekend. please excuse the long post. ;-)

Hey Steve welcome but if 49 is your age you don't qualify as "old" just yet! Smile Thom

Hey Steve Welcome,I know what you mean about the bug never left you..now that you have your own home place break out but don't just buy your first kit without studying your resources first..take your time build 2 or 3 kit boxes so you can build your team slowly with time.what I mean by that is put your non rollers in one box and the one's that are coming into the roll nicely in another kit box.the other box to put in the one's you going to cull and after that use that box for your new youngsters..good luck... ---------- Ralph.

Oldfart, actually i'm 59, born in 49. i have a lot of catching up to do. thanx for the warm welcome. and Ralph, thanx for the welcome too. i'm planning on building a 3 kit setup first. a local flyer, Mike Rose, a real competitor in world cup has agreed to breed me a kit of youngsters. i was able to see his birds last Saturday, and they were impressive. hopefully, these babies will have the same ability. in the meantime, i'll be pouring over this forum, learning as much as i can. i'm sure i'll have plenty of questions, so please be patient, in advance. ---------- Steve in Blue Point, NY

Welcome Steve. It sounds like you are off to a great start. Mike Rose did do well this year. You should have some good young to start with there. Pick the best cock and the best hen from those young and start breeding them next year. You should have a great start like that, and in a couple years you might just find yourself in the big dance with Mike. (World Cup Fly) ---------- Butch @ Sundance Roller Lofts

Good luck and welcome Steve. Your a couple years younger than my dad who got me started with pigeons. I had a 20 year absence from birds but when you grow up with em it's always in the back of your mind. Glad your getting back into the hobby. There's a lot of good information here.

Greetings Steve and Happy Fathers Day. I'm glad to see another poster on this exclusive forum for Birmingham Roller Pigeons. Much of us around here have similar historical backrounds with rollers in that we started out years ago when we were young fellas. I had my first pair of rollers at the age of 10 which was a few decades ago.
Now in regards to your wife thinking you're crazy and weird.... it's all a part of how human beings react to particular things (or circumstances) they don't exactly understand. Much of our failure to understand human nature arises from neglect of this need to have our faculties excited.... and our lives thereby enhanced. The human animal cannot be itself without this exciting enhancement.
NOTE: The watching of a dynamite kit of rolling pigeons in the air is a very exciting event to the first-time onlooker. Keep in mind that excitement is not merely good, it is indispensable to a proper human life.
Take care and good luck Steve!

I'm very lucky to have found Mike Rose, who's breeding me my first kit of babies. He's remarkable, always looking to help me out, and get me started right. today he stopped by with some extra 1x2 wire that he thought i could use for the kitbox floor. i just can't wait to get his birds in the air. the bug had bitten years ago, and i'm so happy it stayed dormant until now. i wish i could post a pic of my wife's face when i tell her my plans for the kit boxes, followed by the breeding loft next year. Marcus, thanx for your insight, i hope others appreciate your comments. ---------- Steve in Blue Point, NY

Steve, Like Marcus, most of us have a very simular story. I started at age seven with a commie that fell from it's nest. I'm sixty two and my wife dosen't quite understand but she is happy I'm not hard to find. I'm in the loft or at the kit box or standing in the yard looking up (with my mouth closed) until my neck is stiff. lol Enjoy your childhood may you never grow up! Thom
