hi all, i'm planning on building my new kitboxes this weekend. i want to make 3 boxes, but am unsure about size. it seems like 3x3x4' tall would be good. any opinions about that or suggestions? i'm going with a 1x1 wire floor, and box perches on the back wall. i'd really like to hear pros and cons about either side perches, v perches or whatever. someone remarked about how nice it is to see his birds in their box perches on the back wall, which made me think that would be good for me too. thanx in advance

Hey Steve and all, I changed the perch style in my kit box since I posted the original pictures. The new ones were not my idea but I don't remember who posted them. They do work great! The thing I like most is the extra room in the kit box. They are cheap, 11 from an 8' 2x4. Each is 10" long at the base and 7 on the flat, they are cut on a 45% angle on both ends. I just start cutting them and flip the 2x4 for each cut so there is no waste. Thom

hey Thom, i like truword1's box, but i think his perches are a bit close to each other. i can see young cock's getting into it with each other. i really like your new perch idea, and i think i'll try yours, since simplicity is excellent. did you just screw them to the wall with long screws or is there a bracket i can't see? ---------- Steve in Blue Point, NY

Hey Steve, Those in the kit box are screwed through the plywood walls from the out side. I also use the same design in my brood loft and I glued them with instant grab type construction glue. I like them so much I'm in the process of changing to that style in all of my setup. Thom

wow, i love this place! i ask a question, and a bunch of great people chime in with help and suggestions. i'm already thinking of modifying Thom's perch to make it stand out from the wall a bit more. some kind of sleeve to stand the perch another inch out. thanx again, everyone! ---------- Steve in Blue Point, NY

Steve49, here are a couple of kit boxes with some of my buddies standing in front of them. You can at least see some different styles.

P.J. Jimmy, I have tried several styles, I tried box, "V" (or New Castle) I even have a bar perch that holds up to ten at a time for the hens. I switched because of the easy cleaning,I just run a four inch putty knife along the back wall and across the top then down each end, done! They are cheap and easy to make. I use the Crown Breeding cage system and when the squeaks leave the nest I replace it with a perch just laying in the cage so they are familiar with them before they go into the weening pen. In the kit box it provides a more open center allowing birds to fly up to a perch easily.
Steve, I tried mounting them on a plate that gave each a space behind the perch but I found it just made it harder to clean and a place to trap small amounts of smelly stuff.

Steve the dimensions are fine. What I would recommend is 1x2" wire floor though the manure won't clog like it might in a 1x1". I put a tray underneath to catch the manure. It takes longer to build with trays underneath but do it right the first time and you'll be glad you did. My doble kit box is 8 feet long and 3' tall and 3' deep. On the fron I made two doors 4 feet wide 3 feet tall, within that big door I have two smaller doors one is a trap door and the other is an access door. One of the things I messed up on my first box was when I put my training cage on the roof that is basically an L shape that hangs over the edge and down, I couldn't open the door without taking the training cage off. When training young birds I like to have another access door besides the main big door to get them out once they have trapped and then put them back on the roof without having to take the training cage off. Hope this makes sense.

Pumkin I know what you mean ..what I did was made small door on the side high up like 4 inch by 6..a little trap door and I put the cage on that side this way I can open the door without moving it.. ---------- Ralph.

Steve, Along with Pumpkin Man's ideas, I'll include mine. The first picture is with everything in place. The welded wire two section floor is plastic coated for easy cleaning. I just lift it out and spray with hose. The pull out tray is lined with oil cloth, ( a sheet plastic found at any dry goods store, for cheap). Then filled to 1/2 inch with sterilized play sand, ( 50 lbs., 3.50 to 4.00$) I clean by sifting with a 10 inch kitchen sieve, it removes all spilt food, poo, feathers, any goo. The sand will not hold smells very easily. The remaining pictures are self explanatory, but note the 1/2 x 1/2 inch mouse proof wire.
