Ok....

I am going to post this once and for all....This years team and 08 are all crosses except for some pure Morts becuase he let me borrow some pairs just for shits and giggles to fill perches because i was short so many birds...

Now....to say I have done nothing with the Ruby rollers is not quite true...

In 06 I qualified for the W/C finals and the Fall Fly Finals....with pure 100% Ruby Rollers and 100% Pure Morts...I had two Lavenders in that team that were crosses and that was from my first trial pair of crosses.

In the W/C I had like 130 raw points in like 9 minutes...maybe a little less I cant remember...anyway...two birds collided in the air during a roll...one was the Lavender Cross...both birds were hurt and came down....so I got a DQ in the finals...the team was working hard...The Lavender cock did not come back until the evening and was laying and limping in the bottom of the kit box..and the other bird never returned....

That same year I won our Sac Club fly season by a pretty large Margin. Again Pure stock on both ends.

In 05 I put up some good teams and they too were pure...and Tim Decker came up to me during the convention and remembered two birds that were tearing it up...and those birds were stocked....Two of my best Ruby breeders in the Stock loft are nest mates and were 40' birds and are nails....the MEaly Bald Cock I post photos of is that very bird.

07 was a rough year becuase I was going through a divorce ...but again..I had some good teams with pure blood..but most were crosses.

So...I will say it like this....I did well with the Pure Ruby's....I have done better with my flashover crosses....

Now...again....I will say it like this...If I did not have faith in the Ruby Rollers I sure as hell would not have Challenged a legend like KGB to a fly off flying pure Ruby's if I thought they were shit...I am not one that likes to lose or be emberassed....

I will sum it up like this. The Ruby Rollers are a great family to start off with....they are "as good as any and better then many"....Every family has its strong and weak points.

WHat I DID NOT LIKE about the RUby Rollers....

-not enough muscle for ME
-Had some kitting issues when coming into the roll
-Not as deep as I like
-Birds would slow the pace and quality would not
be as good as the fly went on...

What I liked about the Rubys

-excellent quality
-excellent type and size on the perch
-Fast and Tight
-very active birds
-excellent quality

What I did not like about the Morts

-not as frequent
-different body types on the perch
-lower % of good birds
-little to strong

What I did like about Morts

-DEEP
-Same speed at start to finish in the deeper birds
-EXCELLENT quality
-Kit like Glue
-Quality was awesome from start to finish in a
fly...never go tired.

What I get with the crosses

-The Ruby Body and consistent type and look
-Frequent Deeper birds
-Excellent quality
-More Muscle
-Very hardy during a fly..not tireing
-a family that LIKES to roll
-More Speed then Both
-9 times out of 10 they will put on a good show
-very easy to handle

What I dont like

-Not as many deeper birds like the pure morts
-they come into the roll at different times
-would like more consistent look on the perch..
but that is better evey year.

If you want to start with a good solid base or foundation the Ruby Rollers are just fine...the price is not that bad..I have paid more for squeeks myself....you never know unless you try.

The last thing I have to say...if they sucked they would not be in my loft....either strain...

rock and ROLL

Paul, This is my fifth year with the Ruby's. I started late in my first year and the B.O.P. shut me down before I had a chance with my young birds. The second year was better but it took me a while to sort out where the goods were. I cut everything but the prodgy from one pair. The third year, I saw much improvement, deeper more consistent birds but the cock's were the best. The forth year showed me a lot of promise and provided enough birds to allow me to selectively try different combinations of pairs. This year is the culmination of the previous breeding seasons. I have seen more and better spin from my young birds then ever before. You briefly touched on one aspect I find frustratingly endearing. All of my birds look and feel exactly alike. It makes it hard to tell who is who in the air but that is compensated by the ease of handling. What is good for one, works for all! I thought this would be my year, and it is but now I'm dreaming of next year! I know there is a plateau but not in the foreseeable future.
Be safe, Thom
