i've only recently joined this forum and since i love my BR's its 'the' place to come and share and learn. however, and i stress this is my opinion based on using other forums, the layout here is so basic that much valuable info is buried too deep in the archives to make it easy to find. yes, i know how to use the search function, and it works, but it lacks many great search features. its the primary layout that leaves a lot to be desired, and an updated forum layout will make the site easier to use. i think that some of the newer forum pages have such great features, that roller pigeon can be made even better with the new forum layout. some of the features are an icon in the forum list if it contains a picture, a link to where frequently asked questions for newbies can be found easily, the ablitiy to go to the next page of a topic without having to return to the homepage. i've got patience, but for example, looking for kit boxes will return hundreds of posts with the word 'kit boxes' in it, but not all will have pictures, if that's what is being sought. check out vwvortex.com (a site for vw enthusiasts) and see the difference. i understand this site has a moderator, and it has to be easy for him to do his job, but i'm wondering if upgrading the forum itself will make that job easier, and this site more fun to use.

Steve, thanks for the suggestions. I have looked at many and have used many forums in my time using the Internet. I have found that there are literally dozens of forum software packages available. Each one has some positive and negative aspects to them. As I endeavor to keep things simple, there are currently no plans to upgrade (or downgrade? lol) the forum.
The search feature on the site can dig down and sort through the thousands of posts. Here is how you can do a search and find kit box pictures:
1: Click on the search box and type in the phrase "kit boxes".
2: Select the refine search button
3: delete the current "kit boxes" phrase then type in "pictures".
Now I found the first 18 hits out of the first 20 had kit box pictures. That's a 90% ratio. They key is knowing how to search. To learn more I recommend using the "search tips" and "advanced search" help features as it will show you how to dig deeper and find specific information. It's not for kids but anyone serious about researching will find it a very powerful search tool.
The "go to next topic" as a feature has its short comings too because it requires you to click through each topic whether you want to see it or not, on a very active forum like RPDC, that is a drawback.
To find the newest topics you want to read, simply go to the main page as it contains the list for all the new forum posts anyway. Simply click on the Roller Forum button at the top right. Simple and clean. Nice to hear from you. Thanks! ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

hi Tony, i was reluctant to post this originally, for fear of 'ruffling feathers', if you know what i mean. thanx for being so open about my ideas, and for explaining in more detail how to get more out of this site. trust me, besides finding a local breeder to get me 'restarted', this site has been the second best part of getting back into the birds. the info is priceless, the banter enlightening, and the dialogue between rollermen is invaluable. thanx for keeping this site up, and for taking my words as they were intended, not to criticize but to offer ideas to improve, but not offend. ---------- Steve in Blue Point, NY
