I just threw out 2 birds to test the air,man that Falcon wont leave me alone,
Im prety much done for the year,2 months and hes back with a vengance,i lost 6 out of my #1 team and about 5 of my youngsters,
this sucks,i cant imagine just breeding to look at them in the loft.
I dont think im ever going to compete in big flys anymore,(not that i expect to do great) but this is out of control.Hector Coya_SGVS

Is Competition Destroying Roller Hobbyists?

Our human nature for fellowship and competition creates a drive to improve our management, breeding and training techniques; hopefully culminating in our participation in the annual events of the World Cup Fly and NBRC Fall Fly or at the very least the local fly clubs.

Like most, I too am all for competition for a variety of reasons including striving to be number 1, doing my best, to be validated by the old “put-up or shut-up” flyers among us.

However, the desire to fit-in and compete often creates a condition that causes many to risk some of their best birds for an elusive trophy which attainment of same seems to be by sheer luck as much as preparation???

Competition in the roller hobby is generally a good thing, however, when it causes so many to risk their best pigeons to BOP (situation becoming worse, not better), how many birds is a fellow supposed to lose before he is sick and tired of the entire effort? Before he quits in frustration? Before he is given a pass on the pressure to fly competition if he is to have real rollers?

Thanks for the offer, but you guys are over 2 hours from me,it whould be you flying my birds, and that i already have enough of,if you want to fly a few of mine,i will give you a few youngsters so you can tell me how they do.
I given Fernando quite a few and i get good feedback,so that might be the only thing to do.Thanks Hector Coya-SGVS

That's some very, very bad news Hector. There are BOP out where I live too. The good thing for me is that there are plenty of other things (their natural prey) for the BOP to consume at the moment... so my birds are getting a lucky break for right now.

I don't know whether or not you live in an urban, suburban or rural environment, but in urban regions (the metropolitan city area) there are very few natural prey for BOP to attack for food other than pigeons, sparrows and doves. There are lots of rats & mice in metropolitan city areas, however they often live and hide inside of buildings and sewers out of plain sight from BOP's.

....oh well

Hope things get better for you and your family of birds down the stretch.

I am glad I don't have them. It is a great feeling knowing that you are flying the birds in a safe environment. But I have a lot of crows around and more than I care for but they are doing the trick and I tolerate them for that.

Hector, send me couple of your good crests and I will fly them for you.
