The protein content has become a quick reference for choosing a feed mix, for example a 16% feed refers to one that has a crude protein content of 16% You will sometimes see references to “heavy” feeds or to “light” feed mixtures. “Heavy generally means that the feed mix is higher in energy, the “light” generally means lower in energy and higher in fiber.

Some of the best energy sources are corn, milo, safflower and when used sparingly raw peanuts. For protein various varieties of peas have been found to be outstanding for use in pigeon feed mixes. Barley is a grain that is moderate in most nutrient levels but is high in fiber making it a great versatile feed ingredient as well as one of the most important grains for conditioning and performance in pigeons.

I've used peanuts when I had racing homers. I picked up that technique from Mike Ganus. It can be used as a boost of energy but you have to feed it at a particular time before basketing and releasing.

I worked for a company that wholesaled nuts and fruits. Like Rob said we had racers that would come in to buy 50# boxes of raw peanuts during the race season. They would tell me that raw peanuts were hard to find and very expensive.

I eat alot of peanut butter for the protein and energy. I would think that it would have pretty much the same affect on the birds, alot of protein and energy. If fed wrong I could see where you might have alot of problems with birds flying too high, too fast and too high. I personally wouldn't waste my time and money on peanuts. Oh yeah, this is the raw peanut not the stuff you get in a can.

I agree Tracey, might not be worth the trouble with Rollers. Even with the racers, once get get home from a race, they're purged and then re-conditioned. I think peanut may even stiffen a roller if given the wrong amount. Either way Victor, if you decided to experiment with us, let me know how it goes.
