Hey All, Is there a better time in the day to avoid the B.O.P.? I have a nesting pair of Cooper's hawk approximately 100 yards from my kit box. It is very high up and where they can see in every direction. I have tried flying in the 8:00 to 11:00 A.M. range and later in the day into early afternoon with no luck. I tried flying in the evening after supper with the same results, around 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. My question, would very early, close to dawn be any better? I don't want to break my lock down if the is no chance of improvement. Thanks Thom

Thom, You are screwed! If they are nesting, they will not leave and they will have a requirement to feed the young during the whole day. Until they move on, I am afraid there is not much you can do. Wish I had better news for you, but I have gone thru this a couple of times and have paid the price. Good luck ---------- Keep em Spinning Joe

Thom, Talk about misfortune! Is this the first year this pair has nested there? My concern would be wether or not they are going to keep coming back if they leave at all. Good Luck!

Thom,
I know you can cut some shit up being an old firefighter.....cut the tree down!!! or you will never fly rollers again...trust me....when they nest they will eat you up. First make sure they are not nesting...They may not be...you may think they are nesting but they are at the highest perch waiting for you to fly...so if you do not see a nest...then cut the tree down...you need wood for the winter....

Thom, Cutting down that tree is a good idea but you need to make sure the nest is empty before you do. You don't want "someone" who might know about the nest filing charges against you. Just a thought. Tracey

It appears from what I have found that the Coopers will breed and nest in May and June and babies will be grown and gone by august...so you may have little ones...check that first and see...I bet they are just checking out your birds and perching...from what I have read...they nest away from people.....that they dont like being out in the open...or close to people when they nest...during observation on a study..the closest they saw a nest to humans was .04 miles in heavy wooded area....in more open areas it was 1 mile from the nearsest human occupancy....so my bet is that they are just hanging out at your feed trough....No nest...cut the tree down....I would in a heart beat.

Hey All, Not my tree! :( I have glassed the tree every time they attack. They disappear into the top of the same tree almost in the same spot, but I can not see into the top of the tree. I'm going to stay in lock down and hope they go away if not fed. Anytime I try to fly one of them is all over me within minutes. It's really big, I thought a male but was told the females are the bigger of the two. The only time it has missed was on an old cock that has been chased before. I can't just feed them so I'm staying in lock down. Thanks for all the help! Thom

I hope Paul is right and that they are just hunting from the tree and not nesting. If I don't feed them then they might go away. Sounds like a Steven King movie! It's a bad dream that's for sure. Thanks guys, its nice to have help only a key stroke away! Thom

Hey Ralph, I'll give the horn a try, thanks. I did save one the other evening by waving a kit box flag and screaming like a banshee, but sad to say I lost three in two days. That is why I'm in lock down. Thom
