George, It's worth his dreams, hard work, years of experience and all the things he has done without to feed them, care for them, house them. How much do you think it's worth to a boy who walks miles to buy 50 cents worth of mix that will only last a few days. How much is it worth to that same boy who uses his hard earned allowance or picks up cans to sell for the food they need. When the other kids are drinking pop or eating candy, he is counting his penny's to buy nest bowls. I don't know, what do you think his bird is worth? Thom

For me, the price is determined by "how" bad do I want it or "how" bad do I need it.. And usually my "wants" always win...lol ---------- Fly High and Roll On

No disrespect to George intended. I think the question was innocent in it's intent. The highest priced bird ever, is only the cost of dinner (or less) to "The Donald" while five dollars is a tremendous amount for some, the boy. It's not about the money, it's the bird. A lifetime of commitment and the return that can not be bought. Money can not and will not buy the desire. Thom
Note: Moderated by Thom,I must have had one glass of red wine to many. :)

Good posts as when someone says price most think of monetary value. But price also can mean what the buyer and seller invested time wise and emotionally to get to the point of buying or selling the bird. Thom's point is that one may have much more invested in a $5 bill then another has invested in a $50 bill. The most important thing is that the seller never sell their junk and always give the buyer the opportunity to get a good return for his investment as the seller rarely really knows what the buyer put in to earning the asking price! An item,(does not matter what it is)is worth what ever you can get for it when YOU want to sell it. example: You have some hot performers an people want to buy the birds you plan to stock. You dont want to sell them so they start offering more and more money. Like Paul said "For me, the price is determined by "how" bad do I want it or "how" bad do I need it..And usually my "wants" always win...lol". The problem is do I want to progress to the next level or do I want the money. I have heard of people spending lots of money for birds and I assume they could afford to pay and they were happy with the purchase. Lets say you dont sell the birds, put them in the stock pen and breed some outstanding babies, are they worth as much as you turned down for the parents? What happens when you are overrun with more babies than you can fly and you WANT to sell some birds. Sometimes you cant even give them away. It is the supply and demand concept at work. I dont blame anybody, as long as both parties are happy with their tranaction. I notice at the pigeon auctions how the price goes up until every body drops out and the happy buyer pays for the bird he just bought.

Sometimes crap is expensive because you don't know what you are getting into. You might be buying pedigree for instance which might cost more, yet may not perform much you expected. Maybe there is a difference between price and worth.
Usually good birds are more expensive in homing world because it can bring big money. For example, when this guy auctioned his birds out and he is considered the best middle distance racer in the whole world, he got to sell his birds with a lot of money: http://www.pipa.be/toppigeons/toppigeon.php?id=853
People who bought it races their children for million dollar price in China, etc.

I have birds that I value highly, but the price is just what something gets sold for. Nobody would pay $100 for my breeders, but I wouldn't sell them for $1000. Some people know the price of everything but the value of nothing. Not my saying but true all the same. I bought a build-it-yourself St John the Baptist model. I built it, painted it, and re-sold it on ebay, guess what?
I made a prophet!!

I would say that a cull is worth about 5.00 if that......squeekers can range from 15.00-100.00 each based on who they are from...I would never pay over 100.00 for a squeeker PERIOD!...I dont care who it is from.....unless it is a donation auction..then I will...if I have the doe...but plain old..walk into a mans loft....100.00 should be max...if you just won the world cup or Fall fly....or something like that.
As far as flown out kit birds.....NO LESS then 100.00 period..that can range from 100.00 to 500.00....again...a flow out kit bird from a top flier or breeder....to me is a minimum of 100.00.....you will not get a flow kit bird at my hose for no less then 100.00....Period...and that is just to get the goods....one of my top tier kit birds....FLOWN OUT....200-300...something that would go in my stock loft..
As for breeders....300-no top amount......my minimum for a young pair of breeders or an old pair of breeders that I have to move 300-400.....you come into my loft with Money and hand and want a pair of breeders that are close to the top....600-700.00 and you will walk home with them....Some of my Top breeders or what ones would call....your Click breeders or Foundation breeders...NO price tag!!!
I am dumping a pair of breeders this year.....one of my mid grade pairs....but if they sell fine...if they dont fine.....I just need room...and thats it.....I hate having breeders waste a year in a hen and cock loft...put them to work for somebody...plus...these breeders you could start out with and of course..breeders come with a guarantee....they WILL produce!!
this is just my opinion...based on what I know friends are selling for...and what I have bought for...and my limits..and I am not a cheap dude by any means.....

I'm with Jay on this but I would add Marketing can influence both greatly. The assumption is often greater than the reality. You get this picture in your mind of what you will finally have if you get XYZ birds and sometimes it's not marketing but just excitement that comes with lofty expectations. It sure is fun buying and selling stuff.

When we were in Texas at the NBEC convention, a fellow that we met indicated that he has spent $10,000 on breeders from a reputable Master Flyer. Interesting, huh? Remember that, Jay? I won't mention any names..... Cliff

Putting a price on a bird is like being a coin collector the bird is worth what your willing to pay for it nothing more nothing less. It might be worth $100.00 to you and $5.00 to someone else.
