This is a two part question first if your birds were spoked of or just lost and started flying with another kit of birds and the owner of the kif shakes his feed can and the bird or birds traps he feeds the birds as if it were his and dont say that he has your until you call or ask ? and question two is do you expect to get your birds if he strays it jerry

Jerry, it,s an unwritten rule, with fanciers, to report all banded strays and re-unite them with their owner. You must expect to get your bird back, otherwise the guy is nothing but a thief.Glen.

If I went over to talk to the guy I would hope to get my birds back. I have lost birds in the past and never had one returned. I flew rooftop birds in NYC and the pigeon wars were a way of life wether you wanted to play or not. Some would give birds back free but most would charge you to get them back. The performance goal was to develop a stock that would kit tightly and drop on a dime. BR's were not a real popular breed in the city and were mostly flown in Jersey or upstate NY. Tracey

hey Val the blue check looks like my bird ,ill be right over...LOL
i believe that if some one strays my birds in, they are welcomed to them, since it would be the fault of the owner for bad training, even though i have returned every bird i have strayed in with a # on it.would i physicaly confront some body for no fault of their own..no

I grew up flying birds in NYC a rooftop flyer and Like JDA said it was a sport catching other flyers birds but we wouldn't call you even if you live across the street if you saw me bring them down you come over and get them but you had to pay a buck that's how we got our feed money, but it got to the point it became pigeons wars like Katyroller stated a way of life. If you caught my birds and I went to your roof I would get shot but as years went by I got older and crazyier and if you caught my birds I would go to your roof mad as hell ..yo you got my bird and if I didn't get it somebody was getting thrown off. me, him or both...it wasn't fun no more glad I left the South Bronx and no body flys here where I'm at as least not miles away and thats guys with homers--..but we didn't fly rollers there were flights and Canadian high flyers and you fly these 200 to 300 at a time.I rememeber at one time I only had 23 Canadians and this guy name Frankie live 2 blocks down had 300 flights and I would bring 2 or 3 of his birds and he couldn't catch mine he would come up to my roof and ask for his birds back but compliment me in catching his birds with the little I had so I would give them back free and became friends made a promise if you catch mine or I catch yours we give them back no conditions but thats when I move a little further back up North..man wow this takes me back ..those were the days rooftop flying, now I'm a ground top flyer kitbox on top of my grass.....------- Ralph.

When I found one roller that trapped with my homers I called the owner(Iceman710). He picked up the bird and in the end, he gifted me 6 birds. So doing good might give you a blessings. A week later when one of my roller got lost, I received a note and phone call that my missing roller went back to his place (2 miles from my home). I picked up the bird and I was very thankful. So as you can see it is like good karma.
I think it is just common courtesy and professionalism to return birds that are not yours. It can also show our real character. We are ambassadors to this roller sport. Represent well.

About 30 years ago I knew a man from New York. This guy flew Tipplers he talked of roof wars. If he strayed your bird it was his choice return it,keep it,or cull it were you can see it. Sounds tough but that is what he told me. He was quite a bit older than I and full of knowledge. Meet him through my rollers. He seen them fly one day and watched to see were they landed.

Jynce, If you can hear the guy shaking the can to signal the birds down. YOU SHOULD have talk to the guy and ask him for your birds back. Now if he didnt give them back to you, then yes I would be upset and perhaps called the authorities with proof that I breed those birds.

hi all jerry here in the uk it is an unwritten law that if you catch someones birds in you have to give them back if you dont + you are in a club you will be kicked out but it was not always like that .in pensoms day they used to catch each others birds in + sell them to the pet shop.it was a normal thing to do .but if you done that now all hell would break loose lol.

Jerry .. no it isn't right as it is belongs to you.. I have a simular situation where someone has a couple of my birds that don't belong to them... the fact is if someone has something that doesn't belong to them they are an individule lacking integrity.. nothing more and nothing less. As far as pigeon catching ... it don't fly unless all parties want to play. ---------- Scott Campbell

JDA..the fact is my A-team are all 2-5 years old .. and I don't stock youngsters. But if someone is snagging up youngsters that aren't completly locked in or keeping someones birds from an overfly than "fault" has nothing to do with anything.
Now tell me Joe.. what does eyesign have anything to do with this topic or the price of tater tots in China ? ---------- Scott Campbell

JDA .. I would hope that you have far more important things to look for when it comes to stocking a bird than to take into account on what you think the eye sign should be for homing instinct. If you don't stock out of the nest nor breed out of youngsters .. so such things should be non-issues. ---------- Scott Campbell

There are numerous reasons why a bird could get lost. Now if the bird was lost within eye sight of its owners loft then it needs to be culled. However weather, preditors or a young bird that has not built up his homing abilities yet is not a fault or a cull. I also believe that the only rule with eye sign in rollers is the fact that they have two eyes. Joe ---------- J.M.Urbon Lofts A Proven Family of Spinners http://www.freewebs.com/jmurbonlofts/

Jerry,I think in your situation,it would be a little disturbing.
On the flip side of that,he's not getting your best.I don't care what the age,or what pairs they are off of etc.If you have done your best to trap train them, they should obey the property at least.
I have a gentlemen that lives fairly close to me and gets his fair share of overflys,I have called him several times that I identified one of his birds. He always wants to know the numbers on the band, even though his initials are on it,never once has he retrieved a bird.
I would not want any bird back that's gone astray,if someone were to bring one back,I would cull it without a second thought. If it was a breeder that got out, that's entirely different.....Aloha,Todd
