as my first kit reaches 4 weeks flying together, i've been wondering if the kit is flying and turning too quickly to allow for some to roll better or deeper. i'm not sure if i'm making sense, but some of these young birds are only flipping once or twice, and rushing to get back with those that aren't flipping or rolling yet. so, if they all were at least showing some desire to slow enough to be able to roll, wouldn't that encourage the others to participate as well? i keep thinking some want to roll, but they're also trying to keep up with the kit, so maybe if the front runners were rolling a bit too, they all would benefit. it seems like sometimes they're flying in tighter circles, where i doubt any bird would attempt a roll. i've not had enough time under a real performing kit to be able to just know this stuff.

Just give them time. That is what a 4 week old kit suppose to do. They will eventualy get there. Some of the ones that you might think doing the best become your roll downs and the oposit is true. Enjoy them while they are young.

You will be suprised in a few more weeks or maybe less. Birds you never saw roll will start. Don't give up on them some just start sooner than others. I've had birds that I had almost given up on. And the next thing you know their spinning like crazy !!

yes
4 week old birds probally matters less than older birds. But non performers are causing your good birds to lay off to stay with the kit. Pull the non-perfromers, and fly sperate, I believe you will see a difference.
I pulled a few of my stiff birds, and my lead birds on occasion, I find a big difference.

4 weeks in the air they really are just learning fly patters. Once you start building an A team then you will need to remove the non performers otherwise they will cause the better birds to fly through the breaks and cause alot of breaks to be missed. That is why you never want to add birds to a kit just for sheer numbers. If you have 16 solid performers then stick with them. Dont add birds just to fly 20 birds. Those extra birds will hurt you more than they will help you. Even if they are mediocre birds. Joe

Larry,

The fall fly is quite a ways out....you can add birds with no problems....now is the time to be experimenting.....dont start setting you team until about 2 weeks out or so....Joe is right...you dont just add birds to add birds.....they have to mesh with the team...but your birds that are into the roll...will look alot different in two months especially when they finish up the moult....

steve49... Ya gotta be "patient"... that's the key with these birds. Just do as everyone above has suggested... Good luck

At the moment my young birds are doing a realy good fly pattern.
Figure 8,there all over the place and even this is an improvment from last year bcause all they did was fly in circles.
I have found that they are breaking more flying in this pattern also.
Not perfect breaks but you can see they are trying to have a go and the future is looking good.
Last year I rushd into it and gave almost half my young birds away due to them not coming onto the roll.
But now I intend on just letting the birds do there thing and they will come on when there ready.
Some are putting in realy fast rolls and birds older then these once aint even rolling.
But I aint in no rush.
I am realy enjoying watching them just fly and doing there breaks.
It looks good bcause they are all going at the same time but some rolling ,some tail riding.
But like I said they are trying.
Good look and hold in there.
Thats my advice and I am giving that advice so you dont make the same mistake i did last year.
yours in roll

thanx for all the responses, everyone. i just wanted to make sure i wasn't causing more harm than good by leaving different level birds together for too long. august 10, they will be flying together 4 weeks, so they really have another week before they reach that point. they all kit well now, with one bird an outbird, but the last couple of times its been back with the kit, and staying up the entire time.
