I began feeding my breeders pellets about a month and a half ago. Using Purina Pigeon Chow Checkers and the young birds are fatter and healthier than ever before. I have noticed a significant increase (40-50%) in water consumption from the breeders that are on pellets. My question is this normal? --------- Keep em Spinning Joe

Yes Joe, they are loaded with sodium, some types of pellets have much less sodium. Never let the water run out or they have rocks in their crops, also keep a feel on the babies that the parents are giving enough water, at times I will feel a need to pump water down them. ---------- Just my Opinion Scott

Joe, It is pretty normal, I use Corona bottles(350ml) in my individuals, they are near empty in the morning, only if they have young and the young are in there 2-3 weeks and older, Ones on eggs consume about 1/3 if that, and the ones that have young younger then 2 weeks are about half. ---------- Tony... I use swansons 28% pigeon pellet and I cut it with wheat milo and sauflower. 1 Part wheat, 1 part milo, 1 part sauflower and one part pellet.....Water consumption is about the same.....the poop is firm and does not smell..I quit using straight pellets 3 years ago.....and my babies are nice and healthy too.

Pellet do have salts so the birds drink more. If they drink more, then they will end up with watery poop. I have observed that they drink twice more water using pellets alone or if your feed contains more pellets.

Hey Guys, Its been a while since I posted on here been busy at work and the birds. I just finished up a new 3 stall kit box to go with the four stall I have now so I have plenty of room for the new birds coming up. But back to the pellet question. I have been using pellets now for 5 years or so. Best move I have ever done. The only thing you have to watch out for is the salt and sodium content. The pellet feed I use now is triple trust out of Lexington Ky. It has the lowest salt content of any pellet I found. Its a 15% protien level chicken layer pellet. I think it has 0.2 to 0.25% salt and sodium. There droppings is small and looks like they been eating grain. They don't drink a lot of water like they do when you have higher levels of salt. Which make a runny nasty poop. And stinks to high heaven. I feed nothing but pellets to all the birds year around. ANd have not seen anything that makes feeding pellets a bad move. The cost is a lot less they are very healthy and the babies grow super eating pellets. I even fly my birds on pellets. Now I switch them to wheat and milo during a comp. But for everyday feeding I use pellets. Hope this helps Brian Middaugh

Hi I'v been using pigeon pallets for the last 4 months and to date have noticed significant difference in their condition. The only major problem I have is with their "droppings", it looks like emu droppings. Tomorrow I will be starting 50% pallets and 50% grain. Lets see the outcome. PS Salt content is only 0.3% on pallets.

Hay rollerpigeon 1963 do you find your breeders wanting to rais 2nd &3rd rounds too soon with chicken layer pellets mine did and when I switched to purina green[smaller than peas] 2yrs ago they have been much better someone told me there were too many hormones in chicken layer for pigeons and it did make sence. My kit birds still get grain during flying time. Dennis..Try your kit birds on your purina green if your breeders were on them you should have no problem getting your kit back on them and as you know they have all a bird needs for a balance diet and all you have to do is learn the right amount per kit.JDA

how do you deal with grit(pellets contain grit) when mixing with grain or going back and forth between grain and pellets? ---------- Steve in Blue Point, NY
