keep them going. they am doing every thin what you want out of a team of young birds. As soon as you change some thin like a couple of days in you will see them change. Start banging on the back or opening up. birds coming to much?? I say why fix some thin that ain't broke. ALL THE BEST

Rick, I would drop back to once a day on flying them. You could even give them a rest day but as long as they are flying and kitting, I would fly them all you want. They are young birds and need air time to learn and gain strength. I think I would start them on more protein if you are going to feed a mix.

When they start spinning good you should start flying them once every other day.

as per Thom's recommendation, i'd go with 1/3 ration in the a.m. fly, and the remaining 2/3 in the p.m. fly. works great for me, and i do it every weekend (twice a day) Jay, about how old would you say the birds should be when you start them flying every other day? i was told to fly 'em so they get strong, twice on weekends too. ---------- Steve in Blue Point, NY

I don't go by how old a bird should be to stop flying them everyday I go by how they doing as in rolling performing more action doing it the right way.then I fly every other day. but when young I fly to build them up get them fit that is....just concern on them kitting and doing the time when young.. ---------- Ralph.

Rick, The mix I was using said 15% guaranteed. I have been talking to a friend that also flys Rubys and feeds nothing but white wheat to his kit birds. I am thinking seriously about trying this. I am torn between wheat and pellets, both would insure an even distribution of feed. The salt content is what worries me about the pellets but there are some low salt pellets available. I tried 50%wheat and 50% milo, my birds went sky high. So high I worried if I would ever see them again. We have discussed feed several times and I'm still lost. In the final analysis it's what works best for your birds and what you can afford. Thom

just curious, how did they arrive at feeding only white wheat? isn't that lacking in nutrients found in other grains? ---------- Steve in Blue Point, NY

steve49, Hey Steve, I'm not qualified to answer that question but I will ask my friend to explain it and get back to you.

One grain is not enough for feed. They won't get all the nutrients needed. If you insist, then you probably need to give them separate vitamins/minerals. But still probably have missing amino acids necessary for body functions. In the wild feral pigeons were known to eat snails. I suppose they do that for protein.

Thom here it goes! When my birds are 5-7 months old they have a tendency too fly fast & high, that is when they go on straight white wheat. The wheat I buy averages 11-12% protein. I know some will argue with that but that is what the feed mills guruanteed analysis is! This accomplishes a couple of things. Everyone is on the same page with nutrition,it slows the wing beat down and drops the height they are flying. Which also induces more rolling due to the slower flying. I feel I have much more control over the birds by simply increasing or decreasing the amount. They get Pro-vital once a week & ACV once a week. Grit is given twice a month.I have been on this program for two years and have yet to see a down side. Now I do watch the birds fly times and performance closely and will on occasion substitute 14% mix if I feel the are in need of a little boost. As far as nutritional value I have a friend who is an accomplished flier that feeds wheat from they time they hit the kit box at 4 weeks old with out any problems. I now a lot will want to argue with this but it is working great for me.IMHO ---------- Ron Borderline lofts

Thanks Ron, I appreciate you answering that question. We are all on a learning curve and what works for one family, might not for another. We are flying the same family and I think what applies to yours will be close with mine. The plus side other then your success would be cost. I can buy three bags of wheat for the price of one bag of mix. Not that I would keep my birds if I could not take care of them, but in this economy every little bit adds up.
Thanks, Ron Thom

Thom,I might add that I tried the 50/50 wheat milo thing. And for maintenance flying I had to make too many adjusments trying to keep a handle on them. They were prone too sky out on that ration.I also feel the quality of performance went down with milo, although it seemed too increase frequency. ---------- Ron Borderline lofts
