Is anyone on here that is afflicted with P.F.L. or know any fanciers who have it and still fly pigeons? The reason I,m asking is because I,m going to start building a loft and want to know how to make it as dust free as possible, as I allready suffer from chronic asthma and have been exposed a lot in the past to friable asbestos.I allready know whats needed as far as personal protective equipment goes, but need some help with the main loft. Some of the kit boxes I,ve seen look well vented, and I wouldn,t be in them anyway.I plan on racing racers and try the Birminghams. Thanks for any help.Glen.

Glen, However you design your loft, I would recommend a giant size shop vac. with a hepa filter and a drywall bag. I run mine everyday and it helps greatly. The filter will protect your shop vac. and the drywall bag will protect you from the fine pigeon dust. My birds are so accustomed to the sound they hardly move out of the way! :)

VENTILATION-VENTILATION- If you live in a good climate, build an open front loft, all wire,a friend of mine in Maryland built his loft with the outsides wire under roof and he could walk in between and water and feed with NO PROBLEMS! AWESOME setup! His name was Charlie Albaugh

ahhhhhhhhhhhh fresh air!

I have an uncle who has been around racing pigeons all his life, and now age 70 has just been diagnosed with pigeon lung!!
I myself have only recently started keeping rollers in large numbers, housing them in a 1.8 m deep pigeon loft and finding the dust they create too much! I always wear a protective face mask when entering the loft.
I am in the process now of designing new kit boxes, nice and airy ones for me and the birds. The deep loft is going!!!!

The pigeon dust bothers me alot, I have went to small coops so I don't have inter to feed. Iam currently working on a loft design that is open and aire. And has an attached fly pen so I will feed them from the outside in the fly pen. When I go in to care for the birds I will wear a mask. And I read a good way to clean the coop Is to spray a lite water mist before cleaning and that keeps the dust down alot.

Install an attic fan that blows to the outside of the loft. This will keep the dust to a minimum.

I agree with what everyone says. A good ventilation, mask during cleaning, good use of vacuum are good ones. I also release all my birds before cleaning so that they won't be flapping all over the place disturbing those dust.
