Hi, I would just like to know the difference between the rolling styles of the canadian roller (monty Neibal & John Wiens birds ) compared to the Birmingham roller. What is your personell preference.

thanks
Fonzy

I do not know the specific style of either of these two family's. I have heard great and wonderful things about Monty's birds and there are few roller men that have reached his level of success and reputation with rollers before his untimely death.

But I think it is fair to assume that the range of roll consisted of the X, () and H patterns. In another unrelated thread, Mother Lode Lofts mentions that in general the X pattern is more common with rollers and that the () and H patterns are less common with the preference to be the () pattern.

Having seen good and bad rollers perform, I tend to agree with MLL that the ones with more velocity are going to look like one of these two patterns with the () pattern most desirable.

My question for you is why do you call these rollers "Canadian" and not consider them Birmingham rollers? FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Tony you hit the nail on the head, normally in a good team you'll see "high" X true H and hopefully a few birds wrapped up like hardballs,I judged John Wiens the Fall before last and it was a good hardworking team of Birminghams,I've also had birds Bred by Monty Nieble here and they can be some good birds but no better than any other fine bred family of birds, both of these men are and were obviously fine handlers of thier birds,Monty's founded his birds from Bruce Cooper out of Washington which came from Pensom,John started with a few birds from Monty back quite a few years ago,he told me four of them,it's intering that John birds are slightly differant than the Niebles as far as type,I also had the oppertunity to judge Brian Krog who recieved Montys Breeders at the time of his death and I was able to handle Montys Stock Birds, these birds are "Birmingham Rollers" the Nieble's generally run in Blue Bar,Blue Check,Red check,Johns birds will run with more white in them.
