Can someone list the protein values in the types of grains? For instance popping corn, wheat, safflower etc. Also what requirements are ideal for the roller in different stages of development, laying eggs, raising youngsters, flying, molt and so forth? For years I've thought that about a 17% mix would suffice, but then I had racing pigeons and it worked well. Thanks for your help,Dave

Hi Pige Inn, For breeders I use pigeon pellets and no need to add anything to this as it has all the nutrients in it. For my stock birds I use standard pigeons mix, without popcorn. I also give my pigeons stock birds vitamins/minerals to their water twice a week.
For my kit birds under 8 months old I have tried this mix and it has done wonders. This mix is as follows:- 30% wheat 25% milo 10% saflour 20% peas 15% pigeon pallets With this mix you get:- 14% protein (for them to maintain their muscle); 60% carb (to give them enough energy for flying); 5% fat (so they don't go "light" on you as they need fat as they are growing babies).
This is a mix that I have had much success in maintaining my young kit birds.
For my mature kits birds I also give the above mix without the pellets. I also add the vitamins/minerals to the water twice a week.
As for my birds when they are molting I give them standard pigeon mix adding ID yeast to the grain and poly seed oil (which is a mix of pigeon seed oils) to boost their protein levels up as they require this for their feather growth. And once again twice a week vitamin/minerals.
I feed grit at all times except when I am breeding. I also give them Pro Biotic in their water twice a week for good "gut" bacteria.
This is what I do with my pigeons I hope it is a help to you. It works for me. Good Luck
